Our Philosophy
The first and most important aspect of Physical Education
is the direct bearing it has on a student’s physical, mental, and social
well being. The student who is well educated physically is more likely to
become a healthy adult who is motivated to remain healthy. With this in
mind, the teachers at Brown Middle School strive to provide an
atmosphere that is a non-threatening one in which every student knows
they can take risks without fear. In trying something new, they will feel
safe physically, mentally, and socially.
Grading Policy
All students will be graded on a percentage. Our classes will be
weighted according to participation, homework, and tests, etc. Students
will be asked to do PE home work from time to time and it will effect their
grade. State Physical Fitness test scores will also be counted as part of
their overall grade. Examples of point deductions are: poor participation,
absences/tardiness, not following rules, gum, jewelry, etc. Extra Credit
and alternative assignments are available to raise your grade, make-up
absences, medicals and excused tardies. It is the responsibility of the
student to get their assignment and turn it in to their teacher. Below is a
sample breakdown of our grading scale. Teachers may alter to fit their
class.

Dress Policy
Acceptable Uniform
* Plain gray t-shirt
* Black shorts (no pockets)
* Athletic shoes with laces
Unacceptable Uniform
* Uniform worn over school clothes
* Uniform that violates school dress code
* Tank top or T-shirt with cut off sleeves
* Loaners checked out from PE
* Shorts with pockets or not black
* Uniform belonging to someone else
* Uniforms that are frayed, altered or
improperly marked (these must be replaced)
* Sandals, Uggs or any other non-athletic
shoe
Students are required to dress out in P.E. every day. They will be
changing into a P.E. uniform consisting of a gray t-shirt, black shorts,
socks and tennis shoes. Uniforms may be purchased from the school or
on your own. If you plan to buy your own please make sure they have no
logos or pockets. Sandals worn to class will affect student’s grades and
they will still participate in activities when safety does not come into
play. If students share clothes, both the loaner and the borrower will
have points deducted from their grade.
Dress Policy (con’t)
Students should not be wearing their PE clothes in any class but PE
unless it is an emergency situation and wearing them has been approved.
Sweats are optional for cold days. There are no color requirements, but
darker is better because students will be on the asphalt and be getting
dirty. Sweats MAY NOT have the following: pockets, zippers, or
hoods! Plain colors are preferred, but any logos must be school
appropriate. Students will still need to wear their P.E. clothes under
their sweats.
These policies are in place to and promote good hygiene and protect the
safety of all students.
Electronic devises including cell phones and Ipods are not needed during
PE classes and will be sent to the office for parent retrieval if brought
outside. Please see the district policy regarding electronics in our binder
reminder.
Loaner Clothes
Clean loaner clothes are available for students who forget the
clothes. We understand forgetfulness but frown upon habitual
borrowing. On the third time borrowing, consequences begin, starting
with detentions and increasing. Students will be responsible for
returning clothes or will they have consequences also.

Locker Room Rules
No use of any body type sprays.
No horseplay!!!
No food, drinks or gum are allowed open in the locker rooms.
Get dressed quickly and go outside.
This is not your bedroom, keep it Clean!!!
Locks & Lockers
Students will have a P.E. locker assigned to them and will be issued
a combination lock at the beginning of the school year. Students are
responsible for that lock and will check it back in at the end of the year.
If the lock is lost or broken a charge of $6.00 will be assessed. No locks
brought from home may be used on lockers. These types of locks will be
cut off. The small lockers outside are for storing your clothes, sweats and
personal items. Students will have large lockers in the locker rooms to use
during their PE class. They will bring the lock from their outside locker to
lock things up inside. Do not switch lockers with other students or you will
be without a locker for the remainder of the year. This is also a time when
sharing is not allowed. Use your assigned locker please.
Excuses
Students will not be excused from activities without a written
note from a parent or guardian. Notes need to be turned in before
activities start and should have the date and a phone number where
parents can be reached. Notes are good for one class period. If students
need more time a doctor’s note will be needed or parents need to contact
the teacher or school nurse. Notes DO NOT excuse students from
dressing, only participation, so dress warm if you are sick. Modified
activities may be given depending on the nature of the illness.
Homework
Aerobic Exercise – exercise that is steady enough for the heart to
supply oxygen that your muscles need.
To reinforce our commitment to the value of regular exercise we have
established an aerobic homework policy. Every month an exercise
calendar is to be completed by students. Students log aerobic exercise,
done outside of school comprised of a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 3
times per week for 4 weeks. Parents need to sign the calendars to
confirm activity was done.
*Each teacher may alter this assignment to fit their needs but the basic
calendar is still the same.
