parks in Taiwan?
2. What do you like most about the
national park you visit?
(scenery, food, animals or…)
3. What did you do when you visit the
national park?
(mountain-climbing, hiking, camping
or…)
1-2
The following are animals commonly seen in
Yellowstone National Park. Match
each picture with its meaning.
1-3
1-4
Wang: Hey, we are free next week. If you
don’t have any travel arrangements
yet, how would you like to go visit the
Yellowstone National Park?
Lin: Sure! Would you like to go with us, Lee?
Lee: Why not? But where are we staying? I
have heard that it’s difficult to book
hotels in the Yellowstone National Park.
1-5
Lin: We can check online to see if there is still
vacancy at the Yellowstone National Park
or hotels nearby.
Wang: Okay. I will check now. Hmm…Have a
look. There is still vacancy from this
hotel.
Lin: Oh, what a luck. Let’s call and reserve.
1-6
In search of wildlife
Wang: Usually, the wildlife hides on the two
sides away from the road and we
cannot see them from the car. Let’s
park the car here and we will walk with
our backpack to search and view
wildlife.
Lee: Oh! Today’s trip is going to be so
exciting.
1-7
Lin: Hush. Lower your voice. Can you see if
there is a dog over there?
Wang: Wait. Let me check with my
binoculars. Hmm….it looks like a wolf
and it’s about to catch something.
Lin: Oh no, it just ran away. Are we talking too
loud?
1-8
Lee: Yes, we should keep quiet and try not to
make a sound while we walk.
Wang: Look at the group of bison on the
grassland over the distant hillsides. It
is an endangered species of bison.
The Yellowstone National Park is
currently the place in the world where
most bison gathers.
1-9
Lin: There is an intersection. Which way do
we take?
Wang: The map shows that this downhill trail
leads to a marshy meadow. We may
be able to see the moose with luck.
1-10
Lee: Does it live in marshy meadows?
Wang: The moose is everywhere in the
Yellowstone National Park, but it
usually wades in the marshy meadows
to look for aquatic plants as food. The
fawns, usually in twins, follow them
everywhere.
1-11
Lin: Look at the marshy meadow. It’s huge!
Wang: Let’s find a hidden place, sit down and
wait patiently for them to show up.
Lee & Lin: Alright.
1-12
Yellowstone National Park is located at the
headwaters of the Yellowstone River, from
which it takes his historical name. It is
established in 1872 by U.S. Congress. It was
the first national park in the world. It spans an
area of 8,983 , about a quarter of Taiwan’s
area. Yellowstone is comprised of lakes,
canyons, rivers and mountain ranges.
1-13
 Yellowstone Lake is one of the largest highaltitude lakes in North America. There are
vast forests and grasslands in the park. It is a
place of wildlife sanctuary. It is also a nice
place to visit.
1-14
Yellowstone is famous for its wildlife.
Hundreds of species of mammals, birds, fish
and reptiles have been documented, some of
which are endangered or threatened in the
world, but are legally protected in the park.
For example, American bison or buffalo is a
big mammal
1-15
 It is about 2 meters tall and 4 meters long. It
eats grass. Their numbers have diminished
to dangerously low levels. Once there were
millions of bison in North America, but now
there are only a few small herds existed.
1-16
hundreds of Thousand travelers visit
Yellowstone every year. They go to
Yellowstone to witness things happening
more than to look at static scenery. So the
visitors move along, trusting to luck, or settle
down and wait. Beyond the range of the
automobile, encounters with wildlife will be full
of magic.
1-17
If you learned to handle a paddle efficiently
and silently, the otter may let you keep
almost abreast of him before he dives. If you
know how to stand or sit perfectly still, the
curious antelope may move toward you
instead of away from you.
1-18
If you are lucky, you may see the bull and
moose emerge from forest shadow and
wade across a marsh, or rainbows shine
among mountains. In the Yellowstone, if you
see a bear, detour! An adult grizzly is the
strongest and most ferocious mammal in
North America.
1-19
Yellowstone is also renowned for its many
geothermal features. A geyser shoots water
like a fountain. A typical geyser eruption may
begin with a flow, or an increase in flow, of
water from the orifice. Groups of geysers are
found in Yellowstone National Park. They
attract travelers very much.
1-20
Possibly the oldest of the park’s geyser is “Castle
Geyser”, named because of its resemblance to
the ruins of an old castle, and it spouts 22 to 30
meter high about every 9 to 10 hours. The most
famous geyser in the world is perhaps “Old
Faithful”; it erupts hot water from deep hole in
the ground for about 4-5 minutes once every 3396 minutes. And people who have kept track of
such a scene have not missed once in the past
eighty years.
1-21
Yellowstone has numerous recreational
opportunities, including hiking, camping,
boating, fishing, horse riding, sightseeing, etc.
It has become the most popular national park
in the US. If you want to visit Yellowstone
National Park, it is suggested that you
arrange your journey as early as possible,
because the accommodation is quite limited
especially in the summer.
1-22
Some hotels, lodges or cabins provide board
and lodging in the park, and there are some
room services available near the entrances of
the park, but it may cause your every round
trip longer than that in the park. If you cannot
find room suitable for you, camping is another
choice.
1-23
If you want to realize more about Yellowstone,
you may visit the Heritage and Research Center,
which is located at Gardiner, near the north
entrance to the park. The center collects any
stocks about Yellowstone National Park,
including historical and natural resources
records, such as archives, geography, geology,
archeology, etc. It is just like a museum of
Yellowstone National Park,
definitely worth a visit.
