NATIONAL PARK RESEARCH PROJECT
PICTURE BOOK
Acadia National Park, Maine
You will create an alphabet book that will feature information you have learned
about your park. You will present your book to the class.
Your book must include:
1. An appropriate cover, which includes your park name, an illustration, and your name.
2. Informative statements and illustrations that pertains to your national park for
the letters of the alphabet that spell your park’s name. (All books need at least 10
pages)


For example: Your national park is Everglades National Park; the ‘A’ page could be: Alligators
can be found in this park. They are one of the more than fifty distinctive reptile types in the
Everglades. The alligator helps preserve other living things by digging basin like holes known as
gator holes that provide water in times of low water levels. Then come up with a picture of an
alligator or draw one.
Another example:
Your park is Yellowstone National Park; the ‘W’ page could be: Yellowstone
is located in the state of Wyoming. Almost fifty percent of all the land in Wyoming is owned by
the US government. Wildfires have occurred in Yellowstone for hundreds of years. Some are
allowed to burn naturally as a means to enable ecosystem change. Draw or paste the map of
Wyoming showing where Yellowstone is located and/or include a picture of a Yellowstone fire.
3. The list below includes topics that you need to include for your national park:
 Location
 Natural Features and how they evolved (sandstone arches,
high cliffs, waterfalls, canyons, etc.)
 Ecosystems, environmental issues
 History
 Description including climate and rainfall
 Fauna and Flora including endangered species
 Interesting Facts
 Photographs
 Activities (what you can do if you visit the park)

It is expected that you meet all deadlines. Points will be deducted for all late
material.
5. References: Books, Internet http://www.nps.gov/, sources from South Hill Library site,
Finger Lakes Library, encyclopedias, other media such as brochures, videos, TV. Also,
you may write or e- mail requesting national park information.
6. You will turn in a completed works cited with the picture book.
7. You will receive some support from Mrs. Vann and me, but this is primarily an
independent gathering of reference information on your own. You will be given time to
work on this in class but you must also budget a substantial amount of time to work on
this at home too. I will be happy to furnish paper, etc. Just ask for what you need.
8. Good luck! I hope you find this an enjoyable way to learn about the geography of the
United States by researching our wonderful national parks.
