Year Two Newsletter
Term One
Dear Parents and/ or Caregivers,
Hello and welcome to Year Two! The children are settling happily
into their new classes and we are all looking forward to an
exciting year where children show positive growth in all areasacademic, social and emotional.
Deeds Not Words
Our Year Two Team
2B Miss Tamsin Bickersteth
2G Mrs Jeanie Gatt
2C Mr Michael Connolly
2W Mrs Jennifer Willard (Stage Supervisor)
Throughout the year our students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively in groups
and with others from across the grade. Teachers meet regularly in grade meetings to
ensure that there is consistency across classes in terms of curriculum and assessment.
Written reports will be sent home at the end of Terms 2 and 4. Interviews are available on
request. We are always happy to speak with you in regard to your child’s progress.
We have listed below some information to inform you about this term’s program. Further
information will be given at our parent teacher information evening to be held on Tuesday
11th February at 6pm- 7pm. We will all meet in the hall for about twenty minutes where
teachers will outline general information about Year Two and then you will move to your
own child’s classroom where specific routines will be discussed by your child’s teacher.
Homework
The aim of the homework program is to review and consolidate work introduced in the
classroom. It will include home reading, Origo Stepping Stones worksheet, English, optional
extension work and Mathletics. Further information concerning homework will be provided
at our parent teacher evening.
Talking and Listening
Children will be allotted a specific news day and given topics related to the HSIE and
Science themes. They will be given two weeks to prepare for their speech.
Literacy Groups
The children will participate in whole class reading activities as well as smaller reading
groups. Individual teachers will discuss their own class organisation at the Parent
Information Night.
Writing
Our writing text types for this term will focus on recounts and narratives. A recount retells a
series of events in the order in which they happen. A narrative is a story with an orientation,
complication, sequence of events and a resolution.
Maths
The Origo Stepping Stones Maths program will be followed in Year Two which is aligned
with the new national curriculum in Mathematics. Maths Groups will be introduced across
the grade during this term.
HSIE
Aboriginal Heritage
This unit of work will focus on Aboriginal Culture of the past and present day.
Science
Sounds
The Sounds Sensational Unit is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. It
provides opportunities for students to investigate how sound is produced, how sound
travels, how sound is used and the characteristics of sound. Students' understanding of
sound and its role in our lives and our community will be developed through hands-on
activities. Students investigate factors that affect the pitch of a sound producer.
Sport
Students will need to wear their sports uniform on this day. See the class timetable below.
Swimming
All Year 2 students will participate in the NSW Department of Education “School Swimming
Scheme” at Warringah Aquatic Centre from 31st March – 11th April. A detailed information
and permission note will be distributed closer to the date.
Recorder
All Year 2 students will begin to learn the recorder this term. Research has shown learning
a musical instrument can also have cognitive benefits in other curriculum areas.
Excursions
Excursions are linked to curriculum topics. Information and permission notes will be sent
home a few weeks before the event.
Absences
All absences are to be covered by a note/letter/email. It is not necessary to ring the office if
your child is absent for 1 or 2 days. If someone else is collecting your child, please inform
the class teacher in advance by note or email.
Late Note: If your child is late for school please go to the Office to sign your child in and
then take your child to their classroom.
Early Release: If you wish to collect your child before 3.10pm your child must be signed out
and a note obtained from the Office to give to the class teacher.
Label everything!
Please ensure all personal belongings are labelled clearly with your child’s name and class.
Equipment
It would be appreciated if each child could bring into class:
1 box of tissues
1 roll of paper towel
1 old T-shirt for use as an art smock
1 bottle of liquid soap
For updated information please check the website regularly under the Year Two page on
the school website http://rosevillepublicschool.net.au/
Please do not hesitate to make an appointment to discuss any concerns or queries you
have with your class teacher. We look forward to sharing this partnership with you and your
child.
Kind regards,
Jeanie Gatt (2G), Tamsin Bickersteth (2B), Michael Connolly (2C) and
Jennifer Willard (2W) – Year 2 Teachers
