EngCvl4 – Stuarts and The Fight w/ Parliament
The Stuarts and the Fight w/ Parliament
When Queen Eliz. Died in 1603, James VI of Scotland took
the throne and renamed himself as King James I.
James, like his son Charles who followed him, believed in
the “Divine Right of Kings” or their “God-given-right-torule”
The Stuarts, did not have much regard for Parliament and
the Puritans and only seemed to provoke them as well as the
rest of the English population.
Charles I was even more aloof and even more narrowminded than his father.
Charles led an extravagant lifestyle and was always causing
problems and asking Parliament for more money.
When Parliament gave conditions to the money he wanted,
Charles found other “sneaky” ways to get it.
Charles tried to rule England without Parliament with little
success.
Charles, in his quest for money and power only alienated
himself from his people and their gov’t.
