Week 12 – Perspective
Exercise 1 – Spatial Depth: Floating Planes
Aim
To introduce the concept of pictorial space and depth. Spatial depth and pictorial
space are known through:
 sharpness, detail, and clarity
 overlapping objects and edges
 size, shape, and scale (perspective)
The sense of spatial depth and three-dimensionality in pictures is also enhanced
through:
 chiaroscuro (shade and shadow)
 context (surroundings)
1A—STUDIO WORK: On an A4 sheet (in portrait orientation), carefully draw a
series of squares (a x a) and rectangles (a x 2a). Using only line weight, scale
and position, make the squares/rectangles appear as though they are floating
towards or away from you, the viewer. Imagine you are looking through a window
and assume that sheets of paper are falling from the sky. Fill the whole paper and
allow some of the figures to go off the page.
1B—HOMEWORK: On an A3 sheet of trace (sketch) paper, side by side, draw
floating squares and rectangles by rendering them in two different versions: light
foreground to dark background & dark foreground to light background.

Exercise 2 – Spatial Depth: One & Two Point Perspectives
You are given 2 exterior and 2 interior images on the reverse of this sheet. Choose
two of them: One in a 1P & the other in a 2P perspective projection.
2A—STUDIO WORK: ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE IMAGE
1. On an A3 sheet of tracing paper, trace the main compositional lines, edges and
outlines of objects that make the photographical composition you chose.
2. Extend edges of orthogonal objects, walls, ceiling, floor edges, columns,
windows etc. to find their natural vanishing point.
3. Indicate the horizon line where parallel horizontal edges should meet.
4. Choose 4 human figures (2 adults & 2 children) from the ones below and
insert into your drawing, ensuring to take care of scale and depth issues.
2B—STUDIO WORK & HOMEWORK: TWO POINT PERSPECTIVE IMAGE
1. On an A3 sheet of tracing paper, trace the main compositional lines, edges and
outlines of objects that make the photographical composition you chose.
2. Extend edges of orthogonal objects, walls, ceiling, floor edges, columns,
windows etc. to find two vanishing points.
3. Indicate the horizon line where parallel horizontal edges should meet.
4. Choose 4 human figures (2 adults & 2 children) from the ones below and
insert into your drawing, ensuring to take care of scale and depth issues.
5. Finally apply tonal shading to your tracings to enhance the spatial depth. Pay
attention to where the objects and surfaces are in the picture field (foreground,
mid-ground, or background), and render accordingly.
