Home Sight Word Activities
(1.) Scramble the letters in a word and ask your child to figure out which
word it is and put the letters in the correct order. Ask your child to read
the word. Repeat for other words.
(2.) Child finds as many sight words as s/he can in a newspaper article,
children’s magazine, or book (food containers are also a great real life
resource) and circles them. Child reads all of the words.
(3.) Play “I Spy…” a sight word in the car (using road signs), in a book, in the
store, etc.
(4.) Make flash cards of the sight words
* child places them in ABC order and reads through the list (top to
bottom, bottom to top, etc)
* play sight word memory (takes 2 sets of cards)
* play sight word ‘Go Fish’ (takes 3 sets of cards)
* play sight word BINGO or sight word Tic Tac Toe
(5.) Word sorts: Child sorts the sight word flashcards different ways,
(following your direction or chooses own way) explains how they are sorted
and reads the words in each group:
(ex) sort by beginning letter/sound
sort by # of letters
sort by ending letter/sound
sort by # of syllables
sort by rhyming and non-rhyming words
sort by vowel sound
(6.) Give clues about a particular sight word and have your child determine
which word you are describing
ex) The word I am thinking of:
has three letters
rhymes with bee
has the beginning sound “s”
My word is ___________
(7.) Choose a sight word and ask your child to use it in a sentence orally.
Encourage longer sentences with details. (ex. The dog ran in the yard.
Instead of: The dog ran.)
(8.) Choose a sight word and ask your child to use it in a sentence orally.
Have your child write the sentence making sure all sight words are spelled
correctly and then have him/her read it. Keep all sentences.
(9.) Have your child read all previously written sentences. Say a sight word
and ask your child to find it and point to it in the sentence.
(10.) What’s Missing? Child places 3-4 words on the table, identifies words,
and then closes his/her eyes while parent removes one word. Child identifies
the missing word. Parent reveals word for child to read and self check.
(11.) Climb the Stairs: As a nighttime routine, put a word card on each step.
The child says each word as s/he climb the stairs (can lie on floor in a
hallway if there are no stairs).
(12.) Ransom Words: Have your child write his/her words by cutting out
letters in a newspaper or magazine and gluing them on a paper. Read all of
the words.
(13.) Student can use an Etch-A-Sketch to write words, self check using
sight word cards and read them.
Thank you for working with your child at home! I hope you and your child
enjoy the activities!
Kindly, Mrs. Gray
