Major vs. Trace Minerals
Major minerals are called major not because they’re
the most important, but because they’re needed
in the largest amounts. The major minerals under
discussion in this article are calcium, phosphorus and
magnesium and are required in gram (g) amounts.
Trace minerals are so named because they are required in smaller amounts, milligrams (mg). The traces
we’re discussing are iron, copper, zinc, manganese and
selenium.
Cobalt and iodine are two trace minerals that don’t
usually show up on a hay analysis but are at low levels
in many hays. If you’re using a concentrated mineral
supplement, fed at 4 oz./day, look for at least 30 ppm
of iodine and 15 ppm of cobalt. Note: In hay #2, because iron is absorbed and retained efficiently, a low
iron on a single sample isn’t reason to supplement,
especially since iron deficiency is highly unlikely in a
horse.
Chart Information
The calculations for the products in the chart are
obtained when you combine that particular hay with
the listed dose for the individual supplement. For
example, in Hay Number 1, Accel is listed as having
16.3 g of calcium.
The product itself
doesn’t contain this
amount of calcium.
The amount listed
is reached when
you feed both the You’ve got to read the bag, add in your hay and then
Hay Number 1 and compare what you get to what you actually want.
2 oz. of Accel.
For individual minerals, our evaluations mean:
• OK = at, above or no more than 0.25 g (Ca, Mg, P) or 10 mg (Cu,
Mg, Z) below adequate
• Low = below the adequate level
• High = 10X or more above adequate.
For ratios, our evaluations mean:
• OK = ideal ratio, or not more than 0.5 deviation from ideal
• High = first mineral in the ratio is too high
compared to the second
• Low = first mineral in the ratio too low compared to the second
