Medical Terms
A medical term may be one word, but it is composed of different
segments. There is the root (or stem) of the word which usually
signifies the body part involved and also the suffix. The suffix follows the root. Between the root and the suffix is usually a combining vowel (unless the suffix itself starts with a vowel).
The root plus the combining vowel (usually an “O”) is called the
combining form. (e.g. Chondr is root for cartilage, and the combining vowel is “o” for the combining form Chondro.)
A prefix comes before the root and usually gives further details,
such as location, chronology, colour, size, etc… of the medical term.
(e.g. Endo- is the prefix meaning within.)
HINT: Its helpful to read a medical term by starting at
the end (i.e. look at the suffix first).
