Important things you need to tell
Rodger read some inspiring thoughts.
Brenda Dalton reminded the deans that division information sheets are due to advising. Spring
registration will begin next week and Brenda wants the information for advisor training. Sarah Ferguson
will be sending Brenda a “do not overload” list and will copy the deans.
Michael Dennehy reported that IRG is reviewing the Student Information Profile to see where it may be
changed. All new students fill out this form that contains pertinent information. Michael asked the deans
to look over the form and let him k now what they think should be retained.
Computer Science Article – Rodger asked the deans to read an article Decoding the Value of Computer
Science he e-mailed to all the deans. He believes it is an excellent article in conjunction with Student
Learning Outcomes. The article was also sent to the computer science faculty.
Sandy Wyche reported on a meeting he had with industry where they stated what programs they would
like to see offered at Brookhaven. Sandy asked them will jobs be available after the training is provided.
Sam Govea asked the deans to remind faculty and adjuncts to take the Blackboard 9.1 assessment
training.
Michael Dennehy reported that Tarrilyn Wall will no longer be doing item analysis. It will be done
through IR.
Oscar Lopez ran a reported on the Top Reasons Students Drop Classes. Rodger read to the group.

Rodger reported that this topic is also discussed at Enrollment Management along with declaring a major.
Paperless Schedule
Rodger reported on a e-mail from Andrew Jones where he followed up on a discussion from VP Council
meeting on November 8. Andrew met with IT staff and it may be possible to go to a paperless schedule.
Question was is this eConnect vs. eCampus and does it involve paperless grading or paperless schedule?
It was reported that streaming videos causing system to run slow. Northlake is going to paperless
scheduling for spring 2011. Brenda believes the paper schedule is obsolete as it is being printed.
Advising does not rely on paper schedule when working with students.
Monica Taliaferro has some conflicting opinions on the schedule. She did report that she is printing
fewer schedules each semester but it has also grown to many more pages. Monica reported that Eastfield
is relying on personal scheduling. She thinks fall 2011 would be an appropriate time to go paperless – it
would become a browsable schedule. Richland will be going paperless fall 2011. This topic will be
discussed again with faculty council officers on November 18.
Student Services/Disability Services
Sandy Wyche had some questions about responsibility for assistant students with disabilities. Are
instructors responsible for assisting students or finding someone to help disabled students. One reason is
the number of disabled students is increasing while special services does not have enough staff to assist.
There is also a legal obligation to assist students. Brenda suggested inviting Beverly Neu Menassa to
come to a meeting to address this issue.
Tutoring
Kendra Vaglienti reported that Brookhaven is currently spending over $100,000 a year for tutoring.
Reading, writing and math are being taught in division labs. Specialized tutoring is costing over $5,000 a
month, and, because of the way we are scheduling, tutors are occasionally being paid even when no
students show up for tutoring." Nursing tutoring is by appointment only. Rodger would like to see some
scheduling. There was a question as to whether tutoring information is getting out to students. Lisa
Ehrich suggested Kendra, Doris Rousey and Donna Crenshaw (tutoring coordinator) attend a faculty
association meeting to discuss this issue. It was agreed Donna will meet with faculty council.
Perkins Equipment Review
Marilyn Lynch distributed a list of all Perkins equipment requests. She asked the deans to double check
their requests. Marilyn will discuss future needs with Rodger and Marion Douglas the first week of
December. Marilyn will also check on tutoring funds.
EEO/SLO’s
These need to be included in syllabi (CORE). Syllabi handed to students should reflect what’s online.
EEO’s will be included in online syllabi for spring 2011. A report needs to be turned into the
Coordinating Board in March 2011.
Meeting adjourned at 3:25.
Rodger met with the deans.
