Dear Media Members,
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
On behalf of the men and women of the New York Racing Association, Inc., thank
you for being a part of the 2014 racing season.
Last season was an exciting one for all of us involved in New York racing. From Palace Malice’s victory in the Belmont Stakes to 3-year-old champion Will Take Charge’s
thrilling triumph in the Travers, from Princess of Sylmar’s three Grade 1 triumphs to
Flat Out’s scintillating score in the Cigar Mile, New York provided the stage for some
of the most memorable racing moments of 2013.
This year promises to be a memorable one for racing in New York as we continue to
enhance our guest experience and improve the quality of our racing.
Christopher K. Kay
CEO & President
The New York Racing Association, Inc.
At Aqueduct Racetrack, we have recently invested $5.9 million in guest-focused capital improvements, including work on the state-of-the-art Longshots sports bar and
simulcast center, which is scheduled to be completed later this year.
At Belmont Park, we have restructured our already world-class stakes schedule to
provide our fans with some of the biggest and best days of racing in the country.
Belmont Stakes Day on June 7 will now include 10 stakes races and $8 million in
purse money, making it the second-richest day in North American racing. Stars and
Stripes Day on July 5 will feature five graded stakes including a pair of million-dollar
races new to Belmont – the Belmont Derby Invitational and the Belmont Oaks Invitational – that could attract racing stars from around the world. Guests coming out to
Belmont this year will also enjoy our new 8’ by 15’ video display wall by the paddock
walking ring offering enhanced picture quality, as well as the more than 130 new HD
televisions added throughout the facility, plus many other improvements.
We will also continue to elevate the experience for our guests at Saratoga Race Course
which this year will feature enhanced Whitney and Travers Days, our first-ever Saratoga Showcase Day for top New York-bred horses, and three exciting Sundays of
graded stakes action to be televised nationally by Fox Sports 1. The historic racetrack
facility, itself, will also be enhanced by 750 new HD televisions; large new video walls
by the paddock, outdoor mutuel bay and Carousel Restaurant; an improved sound
system; greater Wi-Fi capacity; and 125 additional picnic tables. And this year, Saratoga will join Aqueduct and Belmont in installing HD cameras for the transmission of
the highest possible picture quality of our races; and also Trakus, so TV viewers can
more easily follow their horse throughout a race.
The New York Racing Association is the cornerstone for the horse racing industry in
New York State, which provides 17,400 full-time jobs and has a $2.1 billion impact on
the state’s economy. Saratoga Race Course, alone, generates $200 million in economic
impact just within Saratoga County during the meet’s 6 ½ weeks.
We will continue to strive to present an improved experience for our guests who follow the races on site and on line. By doing that, we hope to gain fans, please our existing ones and grow the popularity of thoroughbred racing in New York and beyond.
Best regards,
Chris Kay

HISTORY OF NYRA
Created more than 50 years ago so that New
York State could share in the boom in racing
that followed World War II, The New York
Racing Association, Inc., holds the exclusive
right to conduct racing at Aqueduct, Belmont
Park, and Saratoga until 2033.
NYRA tracks are the cornerstone of the
state’s thoroughbred business, which contributes more than $2 billion annually to New
York State’s economy.
In 2013, average daily handle wagered on races at NYRA’s three racetracks increased 2.3
percent to $9,198,298, up from $8,990,691
in 2012. For the year, NYRA hosted 239 racing days, six fewer than in 2012, and fewer
than any of the preceding four years.Total
on-track handle on NYRA races in 2013 was
$367,022,646, the second highest such total
over the last five years. Wagering on NYRA
races again accounted for more than 20 percent of all monies bet on thoroughbred racing in the U.S. According to Equibase, handle on all races in the United States rose 0.06
percent to $10.88 billion.
NYRA’s beginnings date back to 1955, when
the Greater New York Association acquired
the assets of the four racing associations operating Belmont, Jamaica, Saratoga and Aqueduct racetracks.
Within four years, the NYRA had demolished the old Aqueduct and in 1959 opened
the modern Aqueduct. Jamaica Race Track
was closed the same year. From 1963 through
1968, Belmont Park was shuttered as a new
grandstand was built.
In 2011, Resorts World New York City Casino, operated by Genting New York, opened
at Aqueduct Racetrack. Revenue from the casino is directed to help education in the state
as well as ensure long-term stability for the
racing industry. In 2012, at the direction of
Governor Andrew Cuomo, a temporary, publicly controlled body was put in place to transform management of thoroughbred racing in
New York. The NYRA Reorganization Board
consists of 17 members: eight appointed by
the Governor; two directors each appointed
by the Senate and Assembly, and five directors
appointed by the former NYRA Board.

NYRA AND THE COMMUNITY
BEHIND THE MICROPHONE
The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) is committed to upholding the ideals of community service and support, both
within thoroughbred racing and in the communities surrounding Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course.
Among the industry-related groups receiving ongoing support from NYRA are the Belmont Child Care Association, which
established Anna House, the on-site child care center at Belmont Park for the benefit of working families at the track; the Backstretch
Employee Services Team (B.E.S.T), which provides a wide range of health and human services to workers in the barn areas of our
three racetracks, and the Backstretch Education Fund, which provides educational opportunities for backstretch workers. NYRA
also is a supporter of the New York Racetrack Chaplaincy, Take 2, Take the Lead, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation,
the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, and the Jockey Safety Net Foundation.
National organizations which receive support from NYRA include the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the American Red
Cross, Ronald McDonald House, the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, and Toys for Tots.
In 2013, NYRA received the “Good Neighbor Award” from the American Red Cross of Long Island, and NYRA’s Director of
Community Relations, Joanne Adams, was invited to join its board. Adams also served as Honorary Co-Chair for the 2013 Marine
Toys for Tots Campaign.
NYRA was proud to host the Belmont Stakes Blue Ribbon Run for Prostate Cancer at Belmont Park, which raised more than
$100,000 for the Integrated Medical Foundation. NYRA’s Fabulous Fillies Day at Saratoga Race Course raised $100,000 for The
Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
At Saratoga Race Course, NYRA offers the Community Outreach Booth, which provides local charities and organizations the
opportunity to provide information about their mission and raise much-needed funds. NYRA also donates the Community
Outreach Box in the clubhouse for the entire Saratoga season, which gives groups an additional opportunity to raise funds through
charity auctions. At Belmont Park, NYRA hosts annual community days for Elmont, Floral Park, and Garden City.

NYRA: ON-AIR
In 2014, the National Broadcasting Company Sports Group will again provide extensive coverage of the Grade 1, $1.5 million
Belmont Stakes, the final leg of racing’s Triple Crown to be run for the 146th time on June 7. Last year, NBC’s telecast of Palace
Malice’s victory had a final national rating of 4.5 with a share of 11, translating to seven million viewers. NBC Sports Group also
will offer racing coverage from Saratoga Race Course, having presented seven live broadcasts last year including Will Take Charge’s
thrilling victory over Moreno in the Grade 1, $1 million Travers Stakes.
A number of major stakes at Belmont Park and Saratoga will be featured prominently on a new racing series on Fox Sports 1 in
partnership with The Jockey Club. The Jockey Club Tour series will include the Grade 1 Man o’ War from Belmont Park and the
Coaching Club American Oaks, Saratoga Special, and Sword Dancer Invitational from Saratoga Race Course. Andy Serling and
Richard Migliore, both members of the NYRA broadcast team, will serve as analysts for the Jockey Club Tour on Fox series.
NYRA’s expanded television operations on the NYRA Network include live coverage of NYRA racing and simulcast signals from
around the world. The NYRA Network Presents Racenite offers simulcasting following the NYRA races. The bi-weekly National
Racing Report, which looks at stakes races throughout the country, is shown on the NYRA Network on Saturdays. The wrap-up
edition also airs on HRTV, usually on Wednesdays, while the NYRA Network airs HRTV’s handicapping show, The Edge, on
Saturdays.
The NYRA Network can be found on Channel 1994 on Time Warner Cable or Channel 27 on FIOS.
MSG+ is home to a dynamic offering of NYRA shows. The new Aqueduct/Belmont Park/Saratoga Insider show will launch in
May. Replacing the In 30 daily replay show, the Insider show will focus on the next day’s live racing card with features and analysis.
Starting in April, the weekly wrap-up edition of the National Racing Report will air Monday and Tuesday on MSG+, replacing
Thoroughbred Weekly. Finally, MSG+ will air nine live NYRA racing broadcasts, comprising six Friday Live from Saratoga broadcasts and three New York-bred Showcase Day broadcasts.
This year marks the first time that NYRA is providing a live high definition stream of the races at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and
Saratoga, available online at NYRARewards.com. NYRA Rewards is a free service that allows customers to wager on races from
around the world and returns the largest rebates among all account wagering platforms based in the United States. Using NYRA
Rewards, account holders earn cash back for wagers made on track, through the NYRA Rewards telephone service, on mobile
devices, and on the NYRA Rewards website.

NYRA: ONLINE
Early in 2013, NYRA completely redesigned and upgraded its website, NYRA.com, which was recognized for “Outstanding
Achievement” in the Entertainment category of the 2013 Interactive Media Awards (IMA). The award-winning site presents a
wealth of information via a clean, organized layout with a variety of user-friendly features. Fans, handicappers and horsemen can
easily locate frequently accessed information including entries, results, replays, Talking Horses picks, scratches, track conditions,
and more. The site was designed to be accessible for all visitors, regardless of their previous experience with racing. The “Wagering
101” tutorial helps newcomers learn the sport and how to wager, while experienced horseplayers will find the extensive information
they’ve come to expect from NYRA.
The site features an information-rich leaderboard, with biographical information for owners, trainers, and jockeys. Dynamic
integration with Equibase Company LLC ensures that these statistics, along with entries, results, charts, and workouts, are updated
regularly throughout each racing day.
Increased photo and video content makes the site visually striking. A “Video Corner” displays NYRA TV programs and features,
and photo galleries have been added to the site for the first time. Race replays dating back to 2007 at all three NYRA tracks
are available for instant viewing, with the current day’s replays highlighted at the top of the page. NYRA’s social media feeds –
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube – are integrated at the bottom of the page, allowing fans to see real-time updates.
Additionally, the new NYRA.com is mobile-enabled with a straightforward interface optimized for on-the-go use.

YEAR IN REVIEW
2013
YEAR IN REVIEW : 2012
Some things only get better with age.
During the year in which Saratoga Race
Course celebrated its 150th anniversary, the
Travers Stakes was won by Will Take Charge,
who was trained to victory by Hall of Famer
D. Wayne Lukas, then 77. Lukas celebrated
his 78th birthday in style nine days later
when he captured the closing day feature,
the Grade 1 Hopeful, with Strong Mandate.
Will Take Charge was later named Champion
Three-Year-Old Male for 2013 with Lukas
receiving an Award of Merit at the Eclipse
Awards.
Fellow Hall of Famers Jonathan Sheppard
and H. Allen Jerkens also added to their
legends at Saratoga. Sheppard, 72, continued
his run of winning at least one race at
Saratoga every year since 1969 by saddling
five winners, including New York Turf
Writers Cup hero Italian Wedding, and
Jerkens, 84, received a big round of applause
when he entered the winner’s circle after Go
Unbridled’s repeat in the Saratoga Dew.
Earlier in the year, Palace Malice won the
Belmont Stakes for Dogwood Stable, which
is headed by Cot Campbell, who was 85 years
old on the day of the race. It was the first
Belmont Stakes victory for Dogwood and
8
2014 Media Guide

second for both trainer Todd Pletcher and
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.
The year began with a celebration of youth,
however, as brothers Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Jose
Ortiz finished 1-2 in the Aqueduct Racetrack
inner track standings with 20-year-old Irad
edging 19-year-old Jose 79-76.
The Wood Memorial on April 6 served as a
showdown between unbeaten 3-year-old colts
Verrazano and Vyjack. Verrazano, named
for the bridge which connects Staten Island
and Brooklyn, gave Pletcher his third Wood
victory in four years.
New York racing lost an icon on April 19
when Hall of Fame trainer Tommy “T.J.”
Kelly, the father of trainer Pat Kelly and
NYRA clerk of scales Tim Kelly, died at 93.
Kelly trained champion Plugged Nickle and
also was the co-owner and co-breeder of
popular long-fused runner Evening Attire.
On Memorial Day, Sahara Sky shipped east
to win the Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont
Park under jockey Joel Rosario. The Met Mile
continued a remarkable run for Rosario, who
had garnered the Dubai World Cup in March
with Animal Kingdom and the Kentucky
Derby in May with Orb, trained by Hall of
Famer and NYRA regular Shug McGaughey.
YEAR IN REVIEW : 2012
John Velazquez reached three separate
milestones in 2013. In June, Velazquez won
his 5,000th race when he guided Galloping
Giraffe to a victory at Belmont, and six
weeks later he broke Jerry Bailey’s Saratoga
record when he registered his 694th triumph
at the track. In October, Velazquez claimed
another top spot in the record book when
he reached $297,922,320 in career earnings,
overtaking Pat Day.
Cross Traffic, who lost the Westchester and
Met Mile in photo finishes, carried his speed
1 1/8 miles to take the Whitney Invitational
Handicap on August 3, exactly 150 years
after Saratoga conducted its first race.
Wise Dan toted 129 pounds when he repeated
in the Fourstardave Handicap on August 10,
overtaking New York-bred King Kreesa at the
sixteenth pole and prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths.
Wise Dan later received Horse of the Year
honors for the second straight year.
Big Blue Kitten’s victory in Saratoga’s Sword
Dancer on August 17 was one of three
Grade 1 triumphs that day for owners Ken
and Sarah Ramsey, who also took Arlington
Park’s Arlington Million with Real Solution
and Secretariat with Admiral Kitten. The
Ramseys, who won a record 22 races at
Saratoga, received the 2013 Eclipse Awards
for Outstanding Owner and Outstanding
Breeder.
One day after the Travers, which set records
for on-track and total handle, NYRA feted
jockey Ramon Dominguez, who retired as
the result of injuries he suffered in a spill at
Aqueduct in January. Dominguez received
the Mike Venezia Memorial Award, which is
given to jockeys who exemplify extraordinary
sportsmanship and citizenship, in addition to
collecting his 2012 Eclipse Award, his third
straight.
Competitive racing led to a flurry of Pick
6 carryovers during the Belmont fall meet,
and on September 11 one NYRA Rewards
bettor had the lone winning ticket, worth
$423,424. Later in the meet another ticket
holder cashed for $532,036 on October 26,
the highest since 2009.
Belmont hosted “Super Saturday” on
September 29, and the day lived up to its
name as Ron the Greek dominated the Jockey
Club Gold Cup Invitational by 6 ¾ lengths.
Little Mike returned to the winner’s circle for
the first time since the 2012 Breeders’ Cup
Turf by holding off Big Blue Kitten by a nose
in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational,
while Laughing picked up her fourth straight
graded stakes victory by defeating entry-mate
Tannery in the Flower Bowl Invitational. In
the Beldame Invitational, 3-year-old Princess
of Sylmar overtook reigning Champion Older
Female Royal Delta to prevail by two lengths.
The Beldame was the fifth stakes win at
a NYRA track in 2013 for Princess of
Sylmar, who began her 3-year-old season
by sweeping the Busanda and Busher at
Aqueduct Racetrack. After finishing second
in the Gazelle at the Big A and registering
a 38-1 upset in the Kentucky Oaks, the
Pennsylvania-bred took the Coaching Club
American Oaks and Alabama at Saratoga.
Two months after Super Bowl-winning head
coach Bill Parcells was inducted into the
Pro Football Hall of Fame, the former head
coach of the New York Giants won NYRA’s
biggest race for New York-breds, the Empire
Classic on October 19, with Saratoga Snacks.
Flat Out, who came up short in his attempt
to win his third consecutive Jockey Club
Gold Cup, concluded his career in style on
November 30 when he came from off the
pace to win the Cigar Mile Handicap by 1 ¼
lengths in a race enlivened by champion and
two-time Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint
heroine Groupie Doll (fourth) and Breeders’
Cup Dirt Mile victor Goldencents (seventh).
In the waning days of 2014, trainer David
Jacobson broke the record for wins on the
NYRA circuit in a single year when he picked
up victory No. 160 with Tiz Gianni on
December 27 at the Big A, and finished 2014
with 164 wins.
The 2013 recipients for the Eclipse Awards
for Outstanding Trainer and Jockey, Todd
Pletcher and Javier Castellano, both are regular
participants at NYRA’s tracks. It was a record
sixth Eclipse for Pletcher and the first for
Castellano, who in 2013 set a record for purse
earnings with more than $26.3 million. The
duo found success with Princess of Sylmar
and won 38 of 130 races together in New
York in 2013.

HISTORY OF AQUEDUCT
Aqueduct Racetrack opened on September 27, 1894, on property that belonged to the old Brooklyn Water Works, which was home to a conduit that brought water to New York City from the vast
Hempstead Plain. Also known as the Big A, Aqueduct is the only racetrack in New York City, occupying 210 acres in South Ozone Park in the borough of Queens. Just eight miles from its sister track,
Belmont Park, Aqueduct’s neighbor is John F. Kennedy International Airport, the top international
passenger gateway in the United States.
Through the years, the Big A has been the scene of some of racing’s landmark events, including the
only triple dead heat in stakes history when Brownie, Bossuet, and Wait a Bit hit the wire as one in
the Carter Handicap on June 10, 1944. Man o’ War, Sword Dancer, Kelso, Buckpasser, Dr. Fager, Secretariat, Forego, Easy Goer and Smarty Jones built their legends at Aqueduct, and Cigar, for whom
the Grade 1 Cigar Mile is named, won the first two races of his 16-race winning streak at the Big A.
From 1955-59, Aqueduct was rebuilt at a cost of $34.5 million. With a new grandstand, racing strip,
barns, and accessory buildings, the new Aqueduct opened on September 14, 1959 to a crowd of
42,473 and rave reviews as the most up-to-date racing facility in North America. From 1963-68, during the reconstruction of Belmont Park, Aqueduct was the site of the Belmont Stakes.
In 1975, Aqueduct opened its winterized, one-mile inner dirt track on the former site of the inner
turf course, and on October 11, 1981, it unveiled one of the largest restaurants in New York City, the
multi-tiered Equestris. In 1985 and 1989, Aqueduct underwent two more rounds of improvements,
including the construction of mini-theatres, the expansion of the backyard, paddock and grandstand
and installation of a weather-insulated paddock.
In 2011, Aqueduct commenced its most sweeping change with the opening of the multi-level,
415,000 square foot casino, Resorts World Casino New York City, operated by Genting New York
LLC. The casino, which occupies the former grandstand, commenced operations in October, 2011,
and expanded to a second floor in December, with more than 5,000 VLTs and ETGs available.

HISTORY OF BELMONT
In 1902, a syndicate headed by August Belmont II and former Secretary of the Navy William C.
Whitney sought land on Long Island to build the most elaborate track in America, one modeled after
the great race courses of Europe. They found what they were looking for on the border of Queens
County and Nassau County. Originally known as Foster’s Meadow, the 650 acres of land included a
turreted Tudor-Gothic mansion owned by William de Forest Manice, which was to serve as the track’s
Turf and Field Club until 1956.
The grand opening of Belmont Park on May 4, 1905, prompted the first of countless traffic jams
in Long Island history as more than 40,000 fans, in all manner of conveyance, tried to arrive by the
first race post time of 3 p.m. Not all of them made it in time to see August Belmont II’s Blandy, at
7-1, hold off 100-1 shot Oliver Cromwell in the $1,500 Belmont Inaugural. Later, James R. Keen’s
Sysonby, who would be ranked No. 30 on the Blood-Horse Magazine’s top 100 horses of the 20th
century, made his 3-year-old debut against the super filly Beldame, another of Belmont’s charges. In
the stretch, Sysonby got unexpected competition from 20-1 Race King, and the two hit the wire in a
dead heat.
The most celebrated race at Belmont Park is the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel of racing’s Triple Crown.
Since 1919, when Sir Barton was the first to sweep the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont,
the “Test of the Champion” has crowned but 11 winners of racing’s most prestigious, and elusive, prize.
Belmont Park holds a place in history in other areas as well. In 1910, Wilbur and Orville Wright staged
an international aerial competition at Belmont Park that drew 150,000 spectators. In 1918, the track
served as the New York City terminal for the first airmail service between New York and Washington,
D.C. Belmont Park was the site of “War Relief Day” in 1940 to benefit the American Red Cross and
in 1943 hosted “Back the Attack” Day, wherein fans had to buy a war bond to gain admission to the
track. Total receipts that day were between $25 and $30 million.
Closed in 1963, the rebuilt Belmont Park grandstand reopened on May 20, 1968. Over the next decade
it rocked to the cheers of thousands as Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed (1978)
joined Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941),
Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), and Citation (1948) as Triple Crown winners. History was made in
2007 when Rags to Riches defeated Curlin to become the first filly in 102 years and one of only three
to win the race, and history was denied in 2008 when Da’ Tara ended Big Brown’s bid to sweep the
Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont.

HISTORY OF SARATOGA
Thoroughbred racing has no finer setting than Saratoga Race Course, which last year celebrated the 150th anniversary of its opening. Named one of the world’s greatest sporting venues by Sports Illustrated, the past comes
alive in the historic grandstand every summer as fans experience not only the best in racing, but the unmatched
ambience and charm of historic Saratoga Springs.
Already famous for its mineral baths, Saratoga held its first thoroughbred meet just a month after the Battle of
Gettysburg. Staged by gambler, casino owner, ex-boxing champion and future Congressman John “Old Smoke”
Morrissey and beginning on August 3, 1863, the four-day meet drew thousands of locals and tourists who saw
Lizzie W. defeat Captain Moore in the best-of-three series of races.
Emboldened by the success of that first meet, Morrissey promptly enlisted his friends John R. Hunter, William
Travers and Leonard Jerome to form the Saratoga Association. Its first responsibility was the construction of
a new, permanent grandstand on the current site of Saratoga Race Course. Across the street, the “old course”
became the barn area known as Horse Haven, with the vestiges of the original track still encircling the stables.
While the summer meet routinely drew weekday crowds of more than 10,000 during the 1950’s, there was
concern that the Greater New York Association, formed in 1955, would run a concurrent meet downstate. In
April, 1957, Gov. Averill Harriman signed into law a bill that prohibited a simultaneous downstate meet and
also guaranteed a minimum of 24 days of racing at the Spa. In 1963, the construction of the Northway provided a direct highway route from the Thruway exit in Albany to the racetrack.
Nowadays, the population of Saratoga Springs triples to 75,000 when the thoroughbreds return each summer, with
those who come for the races discovering the area’s amazing breadth of history and culture.
With more than 1,000 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, Saratoga Springs was honored with
the first American Heritage Magazine “Great American Place” award and the National Trust for Historic Places’
“Great American Main Street” award. Walking Magazine cited it as one of America’s “Most Walkable Cities.”
Saratoga Springs is home to the National Museum of Racing, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), the
National Museum of the Dance, Skidmore College, and many art galleries. Resplendent in Victorian architecture,
it also boasts Yaddo Rose Gardens, the Little Theatre at SPAC, the Saratoga Music Hall and the Foundation for
Baroque Music. Nearby, Saratoga Battlefield in Stillwater is dedicated to “The Turning Point of the American
Revolution,” while Ulysses S. Grant’s Cottage at Mt. McGregor is where the bankrupt former president and Civil
War hero, wrote his memoirs and restored his family’s fortune.
Although some may quibble with the order, it’s no wonder that Saratoga’s motto is “Health, history, and horses.”

excitement to race fans at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race
Course since 1990. A native of Chicago, Durkin studied theatre at St. Norbert
College and began calling races at county fairs in Wisconsin in the early 1970s.
Including the Breeders’ Cup, which he called from its inception in 1984 through
2005, and the Triple Crown, which he called through 2010, Durkin has called
races at more than 50 tracks in six countries.
