General Manager Job Description
Salary Range: $40,000 - $52,000/Annually
Minimum Qualifications: 1) General grocery, natural or organic grocery experience; 2)
Competency to lead and manage staff of 25 persons; 3) Ability to read, interpret and
communicate financial reports; 4) Capacity to assess risk and project return on investment.
Preferred Qualifications: 1) Cooperative grocery experience; 2) College degree or minimum 5
years equivalent experience; 3) Experience working with or serving on a board of directors;
4)Exercise creative and innovative problem-solving skills.
Position Summary:
The General Manager is responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the
Main Market Coop (Main Market) in conformance with the policies adopted by the board.
The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors.
In most instances, the General Manager’s primary point of contact is the President of the Board
of Directors.
The Board President may also choose to establish an on-going oversight relationship between
the Board’s Executive Team and the General Manager.

Without limiting this general statement of responsibility, specific responsibilities of the General
Manager include:
Operations
 Establish practices and procedures for daily operations that will ensure a stable,
profitable, and growing business.
 Monitor and manage store operations throughout the various departments.
 Promote and empower continuous quality improvement across all departments.
 Establish procedures to monitor and manage store inventory.
 Maintain appropriate relations with wholesale distributors, local markets and other
industry players and resources.
 Ensure conditions regarding the treatment of paid staff which are humane, fair and
dignified and in accordance with State and Federal law and employee personnel policies
adopted by the Board.
 Ensure adherence to policies and procedures as outlined in the Main Market Employee
Handbook.
 Ensure compliance with all applicable laws: licenses, permits and health regulations
 Establish and implement methods and processes for preventive maintenance of store
equipment
Personnel
 Hire, supervise, and evaluate performance of departmental managers and staff.
 Supervise departmental planning and goal setting.
 Supervise and assist all departmental managers in achieving goals and objectives.
 Perform regular performance reviews of all departmental managers.
 Maintain an organizational structure that promotes fair distribution of work while
maintaining maximum services to customers and members.
 Develop and implement a plan for emergency management succession.
Participation and Leadership
 Participate with the Board as a co-leader in identifying emerging trends and progressive
practices, and establishing organizational goals, and objectives.
 Advise the Board of instances where a policy of Main Market should be altered,
abandoned, or replaced.
 Keep the Board informed regarding operations, community affairs and issues, potential
legal issues, and all other matters relevant to the successful operations of Main Market.
 Monitor and manage member and community relations.
 Serve as the primary communicator of Main Market's vision, mission, and operations to
the community.
 Proactively work with Volunteer Coordinator to provide volunteer opportunities, and
recruit and retain volunteers.
Financial Accountability
 Establish and submit business plans and budgets (annual and as otherwise directed)
which support operations and the fiscal integrity of Main Market, and which follow board
stated priorities when making allocations among competing budgetary needs.
 Supervise the finance, IT, and organizational record-keeping and compliance functions.
 Ensure all procedures and systems for financial control are properly implemented and
followed.
 Support the board and its finance committee in monitoring and managing the budget.
 Supervise the preparation of monthly management reports to the board.
 Management of operational and financial risks, and the documentation of transactions or
conflicts of interest in the management of Main Market's resources.

Marketing
 Innovate, coordinate and implement effective marketing plan.
 Work collaboratively across departments to emphasize and deliver dynamic
merchandising.
 Communicate and coordinate with Marketing Committee and professional advertising
agency to achieve marketing goals.
 Build and sustain relationships with vendors and producers to develop effective product
promotion.
