Job Purpose:
To oversee the running of a laboratory complex
Provide and coordinate technical support to the research and teaching programmes of the department.
Principal Accountabilities (Responsibilities)

To supervise the efficient and safe running of the laboratory complex. Ensuring that all
resources within the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching laboratories are in good
working order and the facilities and services are arranged and delivered according to
required standards

Allocating tasks and preparing work rotas for other members of staff, and providing
instruction, guidance and training where required to ensure the quality of service.

To determine requirements and maintain adequate stock levels to support the departments
research and teaching activities advising on pricing and compiling requisitions to purchase
equipment and consumables with outside suppliers in line with departmental needs.

Convene the technical side of three postgraduate modules. Contributing to the design and
development of techniques, procedures and preparation of materials for the practical
classes.

To advise and supervise the students on the application of equipment or systems in order
that they can utilise the facilities appropriately. Support them in performing practical work
effectively and providing guidance regarding the interpretation of results.

Carry out quantitative and qualitative analysis upon generated data; interpretation of results
and giving recommendations for solutions/conclusions

Record experimental work and present results in a professional manner and contribute to
group meetings.

Adhere to health and safety procedures affecting self and others at all times
Resources Managed / Facts and Figures:
Department has 135 academics and postgraduate staff and 500 associated undergraduate staff.
The post has responsibility for an area servicing three postgraduate courses and 2 academic research
groups.
Equipment in the laboratories has a value of approx. £300k

Internal and External Relationships:
Daily with departmental technical and academic staff at all levels with regard to practical modules
requirements and laboratory services.
Liaise with students during their practical classes to provide advice and guidance regarding their
teaching requirements.
Contact with members of other university departments and services for advice, collaboration etc.
Weekly to monthly interactions with the Departmental Services Manager/Chief Technician and
representatives from companies to discuss supply and purchase of equipment and consumables.
Planning and Organising:
Plan and organise own work schedule in conjunction with the requirements of the timetable to ensure it
meets the needs of the service.
Organise and plan the resources for the area for the week and weeks ahead to ensure academics and
students can undertake their research, teaching and practical work.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience (Indicate which are essential and which are desirable):
Minimum Requirements for Technical & Experimental Family Level 6:





Technical or scientific education to HNC or NVQ4 level.
Expertise with relevant office and other software packages.
Prior work experience, typically of 4 – 5 years.
Depth or breadth of knowledge in a particular area of technical expertise and be recognised as a
technical expert in this area.
Supervisory experience.
