The rehabilitation care at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Langone Medical

Report, it was founded in 1948 and is the largest center of its kind for the treatment of adults and
children with disabilities in New York City. We specialize in the following areas:
Inpatient Programs:
The Brain Injury Program provides a structured therapeutic program tailored to meet the medical and
rehabilitative needs of patients who have sustained a brain injury or neurological illness.
Specialized limb deficiency programs are available to patients who have undergone amputations.
The Medically Complex Conditions Unit offers individualized treatment programs for patients with a
variety of medically complex conditions such as spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s
disease, amputations and pain syndrome.
Specialized pediatric therapy programs are available to newborns, children and young adults, including communication programs, educational services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology and speech-language pathology services.
The Joan and Joel Smilow Cardiac Rehabilitation & Prevention Center provides personalized cardiac
rehabilitation.
The William Randolph Hearst Foundation Stroke Rehabilitation Unit treats all aspects of stroke rehabilitation.
Outpatient Programs and Specialty Services:
The Adult Physical Therapy Outpatient Program offers evaluation and treatment for musculoskeletal
and neurological disorders through individual and group programs.
The Chest Physical Therapy Program provides programs to individuals with lung congestion, secretion retention or areas of lung collapse. Occupational therapists work with individuals to devise a
comprehensive treatment program to help them regain their independence in daily tasks.
The Outpatient Rehabilitation Psychology Service is the largest of its kind in the region, providing care
to patients with neurological and medical conditions on an outpatient basis.
The Physical Therapy Department provides an array of outpatient programs designed to address concerns associated with pregnancy, osteoporosis, pelvic floor dysfunction and some cancers.
The Speech-Language Pathology Department offers rehabilitation services to patients with communication disorders due to neurological problems.
The Swallowing Disorders Center is dedicated to the diagnosis and therapeutic management of swallowing and feeding disorders.
The Vestibular Rehabilitation Program is the first program of its kind in the tri-state area, providing
diagnosis and treatment for patients suffering from dizziness and imbalance.
The Vocational Services Department provides individuals with disabilities with the competencies
needed to return to school, work and to lead a productive lifestyle.
Specialty Clinics:
The Adult Spasticity Clinic provides examination and treatment to patients with spasticity, resulting
from cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and stroke. Patients
with neuromuscular disease receivephysical and occupational therapies, vocational counseling,
equipment and seating and mobility services.
