JOB SPECIFICATION
1. PREAMBLE
2. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties
The Rehab Team Leader / Senior OT Team Leader is responsible to the Regional Director,
Rehabilitation for the planning and delivery, and teamwork practices that enhance outcomes of
the Allied health contribution to the rehabilitation unit as well as to the Director, Occupational
Therapy for the coordination and provision of comprehensive occupational therapy services to
rehabilitation clients, particularly those with neurological conditions. This position is part of the
Rehabilitation Management Team and works collaboratively with this group to achieve the
outcomes of the unit.
The incumbent uses professional judgement and skills to formulate, implement and evaluate
Allied Health administrative procedures and multi-disciplinary work practices for the rehabilitation
unit. The incumbent oversees co-ordination of the team function.
The incumbent takes a leadership role to ensure the development, implementation and review of
clinical governance, research and education within the divisional and rehabilitation frameworks.
The incumbent will take a leadership role in all aspects of team function, and promote and
support the inter-disciplinary approach in the unit.
3. REPORTING/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
(to whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is
responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation)




Responsible to the Regional Director, Rehabilitation, and the Allied Health Site Director.
Responsible to the Director, Occupational Therapy for professional standards and discipline
specific issues.
Provides Team Leader support to AH staff working on rehabilitation wards.
Liaises with other staff within the department, staff from other departments, and organisations
external to the hospital and SA Health.
4. SPECIAL CONDITIONS (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent overtime, etc)







Job and Person Specifications are reviewed regularly as part of the ongoing Performance
Development process.
May be required to work within other locations of the Adelaide Health Service.
Some out of hours work may be required.

4. STATEMENT OF KEY OUTCOMES AND ASSOCIATED ACTIVITIES (group in to major areas
of responsibility / activity and list in descending order of importance).
Responsible for the effective and efficient planning and utilization of the rehabilitation resources by;
 implementing and reviewing the objectives of the Rehabilitation unit and ensure alignment of
AH resources of the team with Southern Adelaide health service Strategic Plans.
 contributing to reviewing the objectives of the Rehabilitation unit in collaboration with the
Management team
 developing long term service goals which align to the activities of the rehabilitation unit and
the strategic directions of the AH in SAHS
 facilitating an interdisciplinary collaboration with all health care professionals in rehabilitation
unit to achieve the best possible continuity of patient care & successful discharge plans,
 auditing and evaluating services provided by the allied health team and implementing change
accordingly.
 undertaking performance review with the divisional director or delegate to ensure team and
unit and personal goals are accomplished and continuous development needs are identified
Manage human and physical resources effectively and efficiently to contribute to achievement of the
key strategic goals of SAHS by;
 maintaining adequate and meaningful records and statistics and preparation of appropriate
reports to management to monitor and maximize resource utilization
 ensuring appropriate resources are negotiated to manage demand peaks and troughs and
achieve service goals, through negotiation with AH Heads of Departments
 collaborate with Rehabilitation Management Team and AH Heads of Departments regarding
service priorities and resource allocation within the available funding to meet performance
targets.
Ensure provision of high quality and safe practice of Rehabilitation AH services by;
 adhering to standards of clinical services and competencies and clinical service development
where available
 ensuring an ongoing quality improvement programme
 collaborate with AH Heads of Departments to ensuring the maintenance of professional
standards of team members
 reviewing current research and technological developments re: applicability of service
development of the unit
 working with the Unit Management Team to improve services and ensure quality patient care
outcomes
 maintaining knowledge & skills in own professional specialty
 supporting staff in development of clinical guidelines and procedures
 contributing to a safe and healthy work environment, free from discrimination and harassment
by working in accordance with legislative requirements, the Code of Conduct and
departmental human resource policies, including the OHS&W requirements
Promote a workplace environment conductive to team development and leadership by
 building and maintaining close working relationships with AH Heads of Departments and other
members of the rehabilitation unit team Management group
 providing team leadership, expertise in regard to role of rehabilitation units, co-ordination and
support to the Allied Health team on the unit
 facilitating an inter-disciplinary approach to health care through close cooperation and liaison
with patient care divisions represented on the unit
Provide specialised clinical Occupational Therapy services to maximise occupational outcomes of
inpatients and outpatients with neurological or medical conditions who receive treatment from RGH
by:
 assessing clients’ occupational abilities, problems and needs using a variety of formal and
informal assessments
 planning and implementing evidence based intervention programs with outcome measures to
evaluate efficacy of therapy programs and introduce new practices in response to evaluations
 supervising PO2/PO1 Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants and
Occupational Therapy Students and other students as appropriate
 providing education / advice to clients and / or relatives about ongoing management
 advising on the assessment and management of complex cases.
 prescribing and arranging for the provision of appropriate equipment
 undertaking home visits
 communicating with clients family, carers and other service providers
 collaborating with other team members and community agencies
 linking clients and carers with relevant community resources and services
 documenting assessment findings and interventions
Enhance consumer participation in service planning and service improvement activities by;
 engendering staff and consumer participation in service planning
 actively seeking inclusion of consumer representatives and consumer feedback relating to
rehabilitation AH services
 understanding consumer needs, and levels of satisfaction with services provided
Contribute to the education, teaching and research activities of the rehabilitation unit by:
 undertaking teaching responsibilities and activities within the division for medical, nursing,
allied health and other professional staff and students, including formal educational programs
as well as supervision of students / staff on clinical placements and work shadowing
placements.

initiating, planning, undertaking and participating in the development of research activities
relevant to rehabilitation. This will include literature searches to develop best practice clinical
guidelines through to formal research, including submission of applications for research
funding.

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (those characteristics considered absolutely necessary)
Educational/Vocational Qualifications
 A degree or other qualification which entitles registration as an Occupational Therapist with the OT
Registration Board of South Australia.
Personal Abilities/Aptitudes/Skills







Demonstrated ability to assume responsibility for the organisation and supervision of clinical
Occupational Therapy services to a designated area as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
This includes management of complex cases (especially neurological).
Ability to lead and co-ordinate an inter-disciplinary team.
Negotiation and management of conflict skills.
Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead change that results in improved outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to ensure achievement of performance targets in relation to activity, quality,

Clinical experience at a senior level, in an acute health care organisation.
