Text: Functions Modeling Change: A Preparation for Calculus, by Connally, Hughes-Hallet, Gleason, et al., 3rd edition, published
by John Wiley & Sons.
Calculator: TI-84 or equivalent. Bring your calculator to class each day and to the Uniform Exams.
Class expectations: As this is a spring class, the pace is extremely fast and you will need to make sure you keep up with the material.
I will expect you to have read the indicated sections of the book on the days they will be covered. If you are confused at any time, let
me know either in class, office hours, or by email so that you do not fall behind.
Course Web Site: https://ctools.umich.edu/portal
My main form of communication with you will be the c-tools site for the course. Here you can keep track of what sections you need
to read and what assignments are due. It will be updated with exam rooms and other information as the semester progresses.
Grading: The grading for the course will be as follows.
Quizzes:

Midterm Exam:
Final Exam:
10%
20%
30%
40%
You are expected to attend all lectures. There will be short weekly quizzes on the material of each chapter covered. There will be no
make-ups for the quizzes, but I will drop the lowest quiz score when I compute your final grade. There is also daily homework for
each section of the book that we cover. The homework is online at http://instruct.math.lsa.umich.edu/. The midterm will
roughly cover the chapters 1-4. The final will be comprehensive but will focus on the material from chapters 5, 6, 8, and 9.
Important Dates:
Midterm Exam
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Tuesday, June 1
Final Exam
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Friday, June 25
Dates for the exams are fixed. Take careful note of the above exam dates and ensure that any travel arrangements do not interfere
with the midterm and final exams. Travel arrangements are not a sufficient excuse to have an exam scheduled on a different day.
[Note: Any student with a documented disability should contact me as soon as possible so that we can discuss arrangements to fit
your needs.]
