Flatland Project
After reading Flatland by Edwin Abbott, choose one of the following
projects. This project is due anytime between the beginning of school and
Thanksgiving. It will count as a quiz grade for the grading period in which
you turn it in. You may obtain a copy of the book from your teacher,
purchase your own, or use the following website which has the complete text

1. Imagine that your are a journalist. Write a book review for your paper’s
Sunday edition. Remember that this should include a summary and an
opinion.
2. Create a visual or model that shows the world of Flatland. Explain your
visual clearly.
3. Create a song or poem depicting the world and culture of Flatland.
4. Create a song or poem depicting the square’s experiences.
5. Write an essay that discusses the social culture of Flatland.
6. Edwin Abbott was a theologian. Write an essay discussing possible
connections between the story of Flatland and theology.
7. Read Sphereland by Dionys Burger. Discuss the extension of the ideas in
Flatland to a three dimensional world.
8. Read Flatterland by Ian Stewart. Discuss the mathematical ideas in this
new work.
