Irregular Shapes





In all of Flatland, irregular shapes are by far the
lowest class.
Irregular shapes are either confined to a life of
solitary confinement, or are executed.
An irregular shape is considered a shape that
does not have equal sides, is not an isosceles
triangle, and is not a 45-45-90 or 30-60-90 right
triangle.
Irregular figures can have any number of sides.
Irregular figures are shunned by society, and are
considered a disgrace.

The Women






Just slightly ahead of the irregulars are the
women.
All of the women are extremely sharp, pointy,
line segments.
They are regarded as the dumbest civilized
figures.
They must follow a set of specialized rules made
only for them, due to the danger of accidentally
walking into them.
Bumping into a women would surely mean
instant death.
All women are line segments, and can never
change.

Soldiers and Laborers




Almost as deadly as the women, the
soldiers and the laborers are isosceles
triangles with a very sharp acute angle.
The soldiers and laborers can only
advance in the class system if they
accomplish something in life.
When they do, their smallest acute angle
grows, until they become equilateral.
30-60-90 and 45-45-90 right triangles are
special, high-ranking members of the
Flatland military, due to their special angle
and side relationships.

Tradesmen




A tradesman is an equilateral triangle.
An equilateral triangle is a triangle that
has all three sides equal.
The equilateral triangle is regarded as the
middle class, and they work in businesses,
own shops, etc., they are also regarded as
respectable.
They also have three equal angles of 60
degrees each and are welcomed by
society.

Professionals and Gentlemen



Higher in rank than the common
tradesman, this category includes all of
the squares and equal-sided pentagons.
A pentagon is a figure with five sides and
a square is a figure with four equal sides.
Professionals and gentlemen are either
very skilled workers or are wealthy
property owners, and are regarded as a
high class.

Nobility




The nobility is regarded as a very high
class.
The nobility consists of all regular shapes
that have between six and about forty
sides.
Nobility members have jobs such as rich
landlords, business owners, and
politicians.
Once in the nobility class, it will be a very
long time before someone in your family
will become an n-gon.

N-Gons



You become an n-gon once your sides are
a regular polygon, and your sides are very
numerous.
You stay an n-gon until your sides become
so numerous that you begin to look like a
perfect and genuine circle.
N-Gons would probably have jobs such as
high politicians, and owners of
monopolies, enterprises, and very large
businesses.

Priests



Once you have so many sides that
you look like a circle to the naked
eye, you receive the highest honor of
priest.
Priests are in charge of Flatland, and
are the smartest and wisest of all the
shapes.
The ranking of “priest” is the highest
ranking that one shape can receive.
