O’Brien & Gere Engineering Inc. is seeking an electrical engineer to support our Lindenhurst, New York
office. The responsibilities of the position include providing design and engineering support for energy
and infrastructure projects. The candidate will work with experienced engineers who will provide
mentoring and technical leadership.
The engineer will be responsible for the timely and accurate completion of projects that are of average
complexity or completion of portions of projects that are of above average complexity. The engineer will
utilize verbal and written communication skills to maintain a close relationship with the client from the
proposal to the completion phase, to confirm that the client receives the designs and opinions
described in the contract between the firm and the client. The engineer will assume increased
budgetary, client contact and business development responsibilities.
Knowledge of electrical systems located within central heating, cooling and power plants found at
hospitals, universities, and large apartment complexes desired. Must be familiar with the design and
specification of new equipment including electrical distribution systems, motors, variable frequency
drives, controls, lighting, electrical auxiliaries, etc. preferred. Experienced with new installations and
rehabilitation of existing equipment is favorable.
Ideal candidate will have experience with electrical system design, technical writing, and engineering
studies and cost estimating, and be able to direct others. Individual should be a self-starter able to carry
multiple projects from concept through construction. Candidate must be able to perform fieldwork,
produce plant layout and detailed design drawings, interpret specifications, incorporate manufacturer’s
technical data, and review submittals.
Excellent oral, written communications and computer skills are necessary. Excellent interpersonal skills
are a must. AutoCAD ability is required. Some travel required in the New York State area.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following:














Prepares electrical designs and perform calculations in support of water, environmental,
advanced manufacturing, and energy brands. Projects include conceptual/feasibility report,
detailed design drawing, and construction/contractor support in the industrial and utility sectors.
Experience with medium-voltage substation, campus distribution, and renewable energy
resource design and implementation is preferred.
Lead electrical focused projects and lead electrical design tasks on large non-electrical projects.
Typical design tasks to include:
 Industrial facility power distribution
 Motor control and coordination with instrumentation/control engineers
 Lighting, grounding, and lightning protection
Fire alarm and general facility electrical system design
Perform power system studies on industrial and utility systems, including grounding, lightning
protection, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash hazard analysis.
Make deductions from analyses to create design deliverables for review by a senior engineer
and review work of others for conformance to O’Brien & Gere and Owner requirements.
Gathers and records information to be used for writing specifications.
Visits job sites to gain field experience, broaden background, and develop practical engineering
skills.
Periodically review the schedule and cost of the projects under his or her supervision
Performs detailed checking of completed work performed under his or her direct supervision
Undertakes research, investigation, writing and editing of reports on the findings
Participates actively in creating a safety culture in the office and at the jobsite.

Skills & Qualifications:






B.S. Electrical Engineering and 5+ years of relevant experience
Desire to lead engineering groups and foster a creative engineering environment
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to clearly communicate, both in
written and verbal form, technical material to non-technical persons; including group
presentations to clients
Desire to work towards and attain a career goal of Professional Engineer
Strong computer skills including both Microsoft Office programs and AutoCAD programs
including Revit
Knowledge of electrical systems located within central heating, cooling and power plants found
at hospitals, universities, and large apartment complexes desired.
