Sales Policy of Auction

Open ceiling on Champion and Reserve Champion livestock and trip winners (who have already participated in

State Fair Market Show ).

Livestock will be sold according to ribbon placings. A sale order will be posted in the livestock pavilion prior to the sale. All exhibitors are expected to take their own animals into the sale ring.

The Livestock Committee met and made the following recommendations for changes for the 4-H Achievement

Day Auction.

** NOTE: Change from premium based on weight and placing to one of placing and premium ceiling for the Achievement Day Auction .

♦ State Fair Market Livestock (Swine, Beef, Sheep & Goat) females can be in the Achievement Day

Auction but would receive the Blue Premium.

♦ Any breeding animal in the animal science project area that participates in the State Fair can receive up to a premium of $50 for Rabbit, $100 Breeding Heifer, $100 Breeding Gilt, $100 Breeding Ewe and

$100 Breeding Doe in the Achievement Day Auction.

1) Champion and Reserve Champion livestock will be sold first, prior to the state fair trip winners , with open ceiling on premiums. Since the State Fair has already been conducted -- all livestock will be sold for premium only.

2) Open Bidding Policy: 4-H exhibitors will be allowed to have only one livestock specie available for open premium bidding. If an exhibitor has champion in two species or has a champion livestock placing plus state fair trip, that 4H’er must make a choice as to which open premium they will take into the auction ring. For example: a 4H’er receives two champion placings (one in steers and one in swine), only one champion animal placing can be placed on sale bill for open premium, the other animal is limited to blue ribbon premium.

Or if they had state fair trip and champion in a livestock specie at Achievement Day, that 4-

H’er needs to decide which open premium he/she wishes to have for the sale bill. This decision must be made at the conclusion of the afternoon show and then inform the Extension Service prior to the printing of the sale bill.

This ruling does not affect families whereby more than one family member may receive a champion placing on

their livestock exhibit and receive open premium. It only limits a single 4-

H’er from receiving more than one open livestock premium in the sale ring.

3) Since the buyer pays premium only, the 4-H member retains ownership and must decide to ship their animal to market or bring animal home (beef, sheep and swine only) or make arrangements with the buyer.

4) Blue and Red placed livestock will participate in the 4-H Auction.

5) Rabbits - Will be weighed and in the auction for premium only.

4-H Achievement Day Competition Policy –

Norman County 4-H members who have participated in the 2015 Minnesota State Fair will now have the opportunity to bring another animal (different animal from the state fair) to 4-H Achievement Day and compete in the show ring, plus showmanship. This only affects state fair exhibitors and it could bring more livestock to

Achievement Day. But one policy that WILL NOT CHANGE: 4-H livestock exhibitors can only receive ONE open premium in the Norman County 4-H Auction. The options that state fair General Livestock 4-H participants (beef, sheep, swine) will have are: (assuming they take the state fair trip)

** State Fair participants, please fill out the Achievement Day Entry Form.

1. Bring a different animal to Achievement Day and compete for ribbon placings and showmanship in the same species they showed at the state fair (if you showed beef at state fair, you could bring another steer to Achievement Day), but member must decide which premium immediately after judging.

2. Do not bring another animal to Achievement Day and take the automatic “open premium” for state fair participants (as in the past).

3. Bring a different animal to Achievement Day for showmanship only and not compete for ribbon placings — champion, reserve champion, blue, red, etc. However, you could bring that second animal into the auction arena to help physically support yourself in the evening auction. Buyers prefer to see animals with the 4-

H’er in the auction arena.

Members must be enrolled in a project in order to be eligible to exhibit!!

Purple Ribbon Club

After much discussion, the Norman County 4-H Program is continuing to support youth in the state 4-H auction, during the Minnesota State Fair. It is called the Purple Ribbon Club and here is how it operates. The

Purple Ribbon Club affects only General Livestock – beef, sheep, goats and swine because they are the only livestock species which are eligible for the Minnesota State Fair 4-H auction.

For 4-H Achievement Day (this year-September 13), 4-H livestock exhibitors in beef, sheep and swine will decide if they want 5 percent of their premium check withheld and set aside for the Purple Ribbon Club.

Funds will be deposited in the Norman County 4-H Federation. If any 4-H member earns the opportunity to be in the MSF 4-H auction (Fall 2015), then Norman County can contribute funds to the Minnesota Livestock

Breeders (which operate the MSF 4-H auction) to support that 4H’er in the auction. If no Norman County 4-

H’er is in the auction, then the funds stay in Norman County 4-H Federation.

The intent is to help support Norman County 4H’ers in the auction, not to buy or pay top premiums for the livestock. Purple Ribbon Clubs are very common in Minnesota counties that have strong livestock programs.

How to participate? Please note the box listed on the enclosed 4-H Achievement Day Entry Blank; ONLY if you DO NOT want to donate 5 percent of your livestock premium (beef, sheep, swine only), check the NO box; otherwise it will be assumed that you will participate. This is your opportunity to give “something back” to the livestock program and support Norman County 4-H members in the Minnesota State Fair 4-H Auction. This is in addition to the 20% of the premium going to support livestock programming in Norman County.

Vegetable Gardening - An exhibit should consist of four different kinds of vegetables. Please label your vegetables, giving the variety name of each.

* Large Crops -- One each - Example: Cabbage, squash, melon, pumpkin, cauliflower, Swiss chard

* Medium Size -- Three each - Example: Tomatoes, onions, peppers, cucumbers, kohlrabi, carrots, beets, turnips.

* Small Size -- Twelve each - Example: Snap beans, lima beans, green peas. Cherry tomatoes will be allowed in vegetable exhibits.

Potato Exhibit - Must consist of 20 tubers, true to type, of uniform size and shape and free from disease or bruises. Clean off dirt with a dry wool cloth and label with variety.

Flower Gardening – fall flower arrangement with container/vase

Small Grains – 2-quart sample of cleaned small grains from 2015 crop OR 2 quart sample of cleaned soybean, corn or sunflowers from 2014 crop

Food Preservation – 2 jars of fruit, jams, jellies, vegetables, pickles, preserves or dried foods.

Each canning exhibit should be in jars or glasses of uniform size, but must be quarts or pints, except for jams, jellies and preserves which may be of smaller sizes but uniform with the same type lids. All low-acid products must be processed in the pressure canner. Each jar should be labeled along the lower edge. Label to be 1

1/2 x 3 1/2 stating:

Product

Year ________

Method of Processing

Length of Processing Time

(minutes)

*Addition to Food Preservation - Dried Foods – may be stored in galss jars, self-sealing plastic bags or airtight plastic bags. The quanity of dried foods should be: fruits and vegetables – ½ cup or more of each, herbs – ¼ cup of each in whole leaf form, 3 strips of meet (i.e. venison or beef jerky).

Project members can exhibit only one exhibit in each of the project areas for which you are enrolled. Example; enrolled in foo d preservation, you can bring only 2 jars of canned fruit, jams, etc…not 2 jars of each type of canning. Example; enrolled in agronomy…you can bring only one 2 quart sample of small grains or row crop…not 2 quarts of each crop. In other words…only one exhibit in each project.

You must be present in the evening to bring your project items into the sale ring at the 4-H Auction, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Once your project exhibit has gone through the auction, it is up to the individual 4-Her to do as they want with the exhibit. The auction is for premium only. Make sure the exhibit is attractive, neat and presentable (in the case of canning…fresh and safe to eat)!

Achievement Day Supper

The Achievement Day supper will be sponsored and served by the Lions Clubs of Norman County and served in the 4-H Building. The supper will be for buyers, exhibitors and their families.

Judging Standards For Achievement Day

All exhibits will be judged on the quality of the exhibit. If the exhibitor or parent is present he or she may talk to the judge after the ribbon placings have been made. No conference judging!
