AT Tool Kit Activity: Writing within a Given Space
Purpose: To assist children who are struggling to write, draw, and cut
within a given space.
Materials needed: One bottle of glue, food coloring
Environment: Home/School/ Community
Preparation:
1. Take the food coloring and drop a few drops of the food coloring into the bottle of
glue.
2. Place the lid of the glue bottle back on and shake for a few minutes until the glue
and food coloring are completely mixed together.
3. Once the glue is mixed and the desired color, take the glue and trace the lines of
the paper or worksheet. Make sure that the lines of the page are covered with a
thick line of the glue and that the glue make a visible thicker line on the page.
4. Once the lines of the paper are traced, allow the glue to dry for a few minutes.
During the activity:
1. Provide the child with the paper/worksheet that has been modified, children will
have both a physical and visual boundary to stay within during the activity.
Extending the activity for mathematics:
1. Boundaries can be created to assist children in writing math problems in rows on
a line or writing math problems in columns.
2. Children working on math worksheets can have the answer fields on the
worksheet traced out to assist students in writing their answers within the given
space of the answer field.
Extending the activity for art/craft activities:
1. Trace the lines of a art/craft activity to assist children in coloring within the lines
of the drawing.
2. Trace the lines of a art/craft activity to assist children in cutting out the figures in
an activity. The physical and visual boundary will assist students in cutting out
figures.
3. Trace the lines of the drawings in a coloring book to allow children to color
within the area of the drawing.
