The Expanded Square Vocabulary: Positive and negative space, balance, contrast, shape, symmetry, asymmetry, organic shape, geometric shape Objective: To create a two-dimensional image that utilizes space, balance, contrast and shape. Materials: White paper, black paper, pencil, glue Directions 1. Complete the worksheet. 2. Measure your paper and measure your square 3. For a symmetrical square center your square. 4. Then lightly trace your square onto the white paper. 5. Draw your design onto the black square. 6. Cut out your shapes one at a time and glue them in the correct spot along the pencil line. 7. Glue the center piece down when you are done cutting out the smaller pieces THE RULES Don’t cut off the corners.Keep the integrity of the square shape. No pieces can be discarded. Every piece you cut away from the square needs to be glued down in its opposing position on the paper. If you cut passed the center you need to off center your asymmetrical squares. Do not use excessive amounts of glue. Cut neatly. Criteria 1. 2. 3. 4. Your design must include an example of all vocabulary words. All lines must be at least double. Neatness counts-cut neatly, glue neatly You must have at least 8 ‘breaks’ per side The more complex and unique the better the project and the better your grade.(25pts) Name________________________________ The Expanded Square Planning worksheet (10pts) Period______ Vocabulary Positive and negative space, balance, contrast, shape, symmetry, asymmetry, organic shape, geometric shape In the boxes below draw two potential design ideas that both include at least one example of the vocabulary words above.
