Meow! Get your ‘cat fix’ at Café Purrfection!
The CAT is out of the bag!
Chatswood Cat Palace launches Sydney’s first cat café, Café Purrfection, where anyone can
enjoy the magic of ‘CAT-fection’ whilst petting and cuddling rescue cats and kittens living at the
Palace. Plus, the coffee is free!
“The cats don’t just offer companionship to anyone who wants it, but also to those who need it,
giving comfort to people who have either lost their cat or can’t have one because of where they
live,” says Sydney’s leading feline veterinarian Dr Kim Kendall, who runs the Chatswood Cat
Palace in Roseville.
Café Purrfection is also the first cat café in the world with trained, temperament-selected cats.
Having opened to the public for a ‘test run’ on March 1st, Café Purrfection is clearly the ‘cat’s
pajamas’!
“We have had wonderful feedback from people, especially the kids. It’s a great educational
experience for them,” says Dr Kendall, who is also an international author of feline care and
behaviour Cats Revealed e-books and founder of www.felinefriendlycare.com.
These beautiful, friendly cats were once homeless and now enjoy the comforts of a 6-star cat
spa and boudoir, spreading feline love … and um, hair.
“We have picked cats who love people and with the routine we provide and the regular
interactions - not to mention access to around-the-clock vet care at my vet clinic next door - I
think they will be happier at Café Purrfection than most cats in private homes,” says Dr Kendall,
The Café cats also spread joy to people. Research has shown that petting and playing with
animals provides strong therapeutic benefits. Cats purring, in fact, has been linked to lowering
stress and the likelihood of having a heart attack, and even strengthening bones, she says.

When patrons come to the café, they can pet a cat while enjoying a free coffee, and they can
also bring their own food. While they cuddle with a feline friend, they can read – such as one of
Dr Kendall’s three Cats Revealed e-books - chat to another cat PURRson or the cat!
“People visit Café Purrfection to enjoy the presence and subtlety of a cat. Those who haven’t
got a cat now will start to think after their visit to the café that maybe they will get one,” she
says.
There is no age restriction to visit Café Purrfection, but you must be able to sit quietly for a little
while. You don’t even need to like cats – you’ll be converted in no time!
Café Purrfection a place of healing
People whose cat have passed away have also found great comfort in spending time at Café
Purrfection. Fiona Sams had a very difficult time dealing with the unexpected death of her
beloved feline companion a few months ago.
“Sophie was my whole world. I never had children so she was my child. I spoiled her rotten and
indulged her, and the household ran to her schedule. Her death has been absolutely devastating
to me,” she says. “Spending time in the company of other cats at Café Purrfection is very
therapeutic and has definitely helped to ease the loneliness of losing my Sophie. There’s nothing
quite so soothing as patting a cat and listening to its being content in your company and purring
away.”
Ms Sams will get another cat one day – actually, she plans to get two. In the meantime, she says
having the option to visit Café Purrfection and get some cat love is a perfect replacement. In
fact, the Café has inspired Ms Sams to enrol in a companion animal course and complete her
work experience at Café Purrfection!
“Café Purrfection is a great introduction to someone who has never had cats, is planning to get
one or who doesn’t have the opportunity to have cats of their own,” she says.

Cost is $20 per hour - a subsidy for the Cafe cats’ maintenance – which includes treats for the
cats.
Special interest groups can also book tables (three people maximum to one cat). Great place to
meet for your next book club meeting or play cards with friends!
