“Glutamate, Prefrontal Cortex, and Schizophrenia: Capturing the Angel
in Angel Dust”

Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation participants should be able to: 1) Describe the contributions of abnormalities in glutamate
neurotransmission to the neurobiology of schizophrenia; 2) Identify working memory as a prototypic cognitive impairment in schizophrenia in
order to illustrate the nature of prefrontal/cortical functional impairments and to show how these impairments may be modeled by the effects of
blockade of NMDA glutamate receptors upon both excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission; and 3) Discuss the rationale for testing drugs
that directly or indirectly enhance NMDA glutamate receptors or, paradoxically, reduce hyperactivity of the glutamate system in the treatment of
schizophrenia.

neuroimaging studies have enhanced our understanding of typical development; and 3) Describe how neuroimaging studies are advancing what is
known about childhood psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorder.
