“Expressed Emotion, Perceived Criticism and Anxiety Disorders”

Objectives : At the conclusion of this presentation participants should be able to: 1) discuss the similarities and differences in anxious outpatients’ responses to familial hostility, criticism, perceived criticism, and emotional over involvement, compared to responses of patients with other disorders; 2) gain knowledge of how expressed emotion is manifest in behavioral interactions between patients and relatives; 3) describe what variables are involved in which relatives are likely to become high in expressed emotion and which patients are likely to perceive their relatives as critical; and 4) understand the implications of expressed emotion and perceived criticism research for treatment of anxious patients and their families.
