POSITION DESCRIPTION

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Boone County Historical Society

Position reports to Board of Directors

Full-Time Position: Position is classified as FLSA Exempt. No paid overtime. The duties of this position require work to be performed outside of normal work hours which may include evenings and weekends.

Compensation: As determined by the Board based on education and experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for the orderly and efficient operation of the Society’s properties, museums, programs and attractions.

Work with the Board, officers and membership of the Society.

Planning and directing the Society through committees and other responsible participants.

Plan programs and events that fulfill the purpose of the Society.

Serves as the Society’s representative when interacting with members, volunteers, and participants concerning events scheduled at Society locations.

Represents the Society to the community.

Responsible for developing, planning and partnering with public or private associations and schools in programs that further the Society’s mission.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise, coordinate, and assist in activities of the Society’s, volunteers, committees and interns.

Communicate Society’s activities and policies to the board, membership, and other interested parties through available local print and radio media, US mail, electronic systems, and web sites.

Supervise maintenance and ensure that the museums are kept in an operational, presentable and safe condition for the public.

Supervise research on Boone County history; demonstrate familiarity with printed and archival sources for local history. Actively become aware of and study events of Boone County history.

Supervise the proper care, storage, documentation, and usage of the Society’s collections and archives.

Recruit volunteers to meet the needs of the Society.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR SOCIETY:

Develop annual budget in consultation with Treasurer and budget committee and oversee the fiscal affairs of the Society.

Coordinate fund-raising activities; supervises and participates in writing grant applications for the Society, its museums, and attractions.

Facilitate programs and networks with city, county, state or private organizations to increase external funding.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS RELATED DUTIES:

- Director will attend all Executive Committee and Board of Director meetings and assist with preparing agendas.

- On behalf of the Board, Director shall maintain positive relations with local governments, chambers of commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureau and area historical societies.

- Director may have other duties as assigned by the President of the Board to enhance the mission of the Society.

- Director shall interact with area organizations and societies to be informed about meetings benefiting Society members and volunteers

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

Master’s degree in history, museum studies, or closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Three years of experience working in museums.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to work on multiple assignments simultaneously.

Position requires the ability to work well with a board, membership, and the public.

Strong organizational skills and careful attention to details is required.

Must be cooperative, flexible, and responsive to challenges as well a strong leader to establish priorities and complete tasks within broad objectives as outlined by the President and the Board.

Experience needed in computer and telecommunications technology;

Familiarity with, and involvement in, the local community is an asset.
