BUS DRIVER-MAINTENANCE HELPER
DEFINITION
Under supervision, to operate District buses transporting athletic teams to out-of-town games and taking
student groups on approved field trips; to perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the area of
maintenance or construction; and to do related work as assigned.
TYPICAL DUTIES
AS A BUS DRIVER: Transports students and instructors on field trips to various locations, following
directions as to routes or selecting the best route if no specific directions have been given; meets time
schedules for departure and arrival and follows district policies regarding the safe transportation of staff
and students. Transportation responsibilities may include overnight and long-distance trips.
Comply with all state and federal regulations pertaining to commercial bus operations; services the bus
with gas and oil; check tires and battery; washes and cleans bus, both exterior and interior; assists in
maintaining bus in safe operating condition; keeps records of mileage, fuel and oil usage; prepares reports
of driving hazards and incidents; works cooperatively with instructors and students while on field trips;
performs other related duties as assigned.
AS A MAINTENANCE HELPER: Assists skilled mechanics with lubrication, oil changes, tire repairs
on all types of vehicles; steam cleans equipment; assists lawn mower mechanic with minor repairs; picks
up and delivers district vehicles for repairs; picks up parts and/or materials from vendors; performs other
semi-skilled work in the maintenance or construction area as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of four years experience as a charter bus driver engaged in long-distance charters and/or tours;
or four years experience as a school bus School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) driver transporting students
and staff.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a State of California Class A or B driver's license with a passenger endorsement and a
current medical certificate. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon the successful completion
of a medical evaluation and drug tests. Subject to random drug testing once employed. Possession of a
valid School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) issued by the California Highway Patrol is desirable.
Must notify District immediately upon loss or change in status of driver’s license privilege.

KNOWLEDGE OF
Safe driving practices; provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code
applicable to operation of school buses; regional and California metropolitan geographies; diesel engine
operation; air brake systems and other safety features that are common to passenger buses; first-aid
practices; CPR procedures; basic operation of tools used in building and grounds maintenance; use of
common hand tools; safety practices that are applicable to the maintenance trades.
ABILITY TO (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
Safely operate a commercial bus and other automotive equipment, staying alert, exercising good
judgment and extreme caution; maintain driver's log and other records pertaining to bus trips; work varied
schedule including nights, holidays, and weekends; perform manual work of lifting and moving heavy
objects; perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance work; follow directions; work effectively with
others; read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Perform specialized maintenance duties in the care and maintenance of District vehicles and equipment
which require walking, stooping, bending at waist and knees, climbing, stretching, pushing equipment
and carrying tools. Long periods of sitting.
