SOCCER’S BIGGEST DAY
There is no doubt of the importance of the Beamish Cup Final at any time, but on Sunday next a
mouth-watering game is in prospect with two neighbouring clubs playing against each other in
Skibbereen. Bunratty are no strangers to finals, but this will be no ordinary final as it will be played
against Mizen AFC. A better way to explain to all, it is neighbours against neighbours and even
more exciting family members against family and friends against friends. A huge turnout is
expected as supporters for both clubs will be out in full strength. Of course everyone’s asking
who’s supporting who! This will all be known on Sunday next as we will be tying our true colours to
the mast. Best of luck to both teams on what promises to be the soccer game of the century
HEALTH AND SAFETY AUTHORITY WILL NOT PROHIBIT BURIALS
Well, we ran with this story about the grave digging fiasco a few weeks ago and this was
something that was not going to go away until it was fully sorted as both politicians and the
ordinary people joined together in outrage that a tradition passed down from generation to
generation with the burial of family members was now subject to farcical new rules that bordered
on the line of a near joke. While the Council suspended the implementation of the rules for six
months last Monday week; the subsequent statement from the HSE throws these dreamed up
plans in the bin. It is the news that all in this County wanted to hear as the HSE have now clearly
clarified the situation in relation to burial grounds, There was fury all over Cork County in the past
few weeks as Cork County Council erected signs at council burial grounds clearly telling people of
new rules that were been implemented. But for the majority of people this was one step too far
and huge pressure was put on all to see a bit of common sense here. On Monday week last the
Cork County Council postponed for six months the implementation of the bye-laws, but by then,
with furious Councillors and an angry public at boiling point, it was clear that the new bye-laws
were clearly dead and buried. Within hours of the announcement of the postponement the HSE
came out and cleared up the matter for a very confused public. Their statement was clear to all. It
says that it had not prohibited in any way the traditional custom of family members assisting with
the digging of loved ones’ graves; they continued by saying that the digging of graves by family
and friends did not come under the remit of the HSE . This news was greatly welcomed by all and
now surely buries these heavy handed moves that were being imposed on the people against their
will.

to resounding cheers from a well supported Mizen side. Final Score 3-0. Goal Scorers Daniel O Driscoll, Patrick Scully and Daniel O'
Callaghan got a goal from a Penalty take. Mizen received high praise as John Healy from the West Cork Soccer board presented
both teams with league runner-up medals. Congratulations Lads!! You have done yourselves and your supporters proud! We will be

Mizen Rovers—Minor League -The second game in the minor league saw our u18 lads at home taking on St Colum’s from Kealkil
on Tues evening last. Goleen lads got off to a flying start and with some stylish fast flowing football and getting some fine early
scores to settle the team. Colum’s’ drove up field on occasion but our backs stood firm and limited them to a few points throughout
the first half. Mizen kept up the pressure in the second half and added score after score running out easy winners in the end on a
score line of 3-14 to 1-05.Team-Keith Whitley, Ronan Kennedy, Daryl Connell, Michael Collins, Shane O'Leary, Aaron Barry, Paudie
Scully, Sean Sheehan, James Murphy, Chris Kennedy, Darren O'Donovan, Cathal O'Sullivan, and Kodie Healy. U16 HURLING-It
was off to Leap for an early morning game on Sunday last to take on the local team Kilmacabea in the first round of the u16 hurling
league. Mizen Rovers got into their stride early and had the home defence under pressure from the start which yielded two goals
and a point inside the first quarter. The home side were picking away a few points on the break which kept them in the game but
Mizen still held the lead at halftime. Some fine scores early in the second half had the Mizen supporters singing in the stands and the
lead was at six. Then came the turning point. A disputed goal for Mizen which went in the net but not in the in the referee’s notebook
cost us dearly with the home side getting some late scores and recording a one point victory. Well done to this fine young team on a
great display and victories ahead for sure. Thanks to parents who made the journey to support. TEAM-Eoghan Sheehan, Jed Little,

Table Tennis News—What an amazing weekend of table tennis! The Munster Top 8’s is the highlight of the Provincial season with
only the best invited and with everyone playing everyone there is no place to hide and no easy matches on the day. The Top 8’s also
has a significant effect on the selection of the Munster Junior Team the major goal for the top players in Munster. Saturday brought
the very competitive Under 12 and U17 age categories together. Goleen had three competitors in the shape of Sam Coughlan,
James Kelly and Mair Kelly. This was the first time for Sam in an event of this nature and he was not overawed in the slightest. He
was competitive in every match and even took the Munster No.3 to a 5 set thriller that he only lost by the smallest of margins. He
also took a set of James Kelly for the first time in competition and represented himself and the club extremely well. James was in
stunning form and cruised through his opening matches. He eventually came up against one of his main rivals Karl Walsh from
Ballincollig who he had lost in 5 sets to the previous weekend. Once again this was a thriller as it reached the final set but he brought
home the result in his favour after some amazing rallies with both players giving their all. Spurred on he went into the final group
where he beat West Cork rival Tom Walsh and faced his final hurdle in the shape of Munster No.1 and Irish No.3 Gearoid
O’Donoghue from Ballincollig. Not to be denied his crowning achievement he swept him off the table in 3 straight sets to take the
Munster U12 Top spot and his first U12 Munster title. Mair Kelly had a reasonable day and played well but under the pressure of
qualification she found the going tough and finished a creditable 5th place behind her main Munster rival. However after one of the
U14s pulled out for the Sunday she was eligible to play in the U14 event. She made the very best of this opportunity and defeated
two of the already selected the Munster U12 No.2 and 3 including the Irish No.6 from Killarney. With such an impressive set of
results she was confirmed with the 4th place on the Munster Team and will represent the province later this month at the Junior
Interprovincial Championships. James Kelly was also back in action on the Sunday defending his Munster No.1 Under 10 position.
After all the excitement of the Saturday he managed to maintain his form and took his second title and broke yet another table tennis
record becoming the first competitor ever to take a double title at this event. Can it get better? Well next weekend the pressure will
be on once again as James and Mair travel to Dublin for the 2011 Irish Junior National Championships! Owen Kelly.
