GDCC ELECTION— VOTING PAPERS WILL BE POSTED ON MONDAY JAN 17TH.
Dear Neighbour, Here we are again, three years have gone by and another Community Council has almost completed its term. It
is necessary for us get underway with the process of electing members to the new Goleen & District Community Council. We would
encourage each and every one of you to exercise your vote and so put in place a new Community Council to continue the good work
carried out over the past 12 years. We have set out a broad outline of the projects and issues which the outgoing Community
Council involved itself in not only by giving financial assistance and a lot of voluntary time but by also taking the lead on certainissues
in order to achieve the required results.
Community Council Activities In the past three years the Community Council has worked on many projects with you for the
greater benefit of all. The projects include continued work with the Rural Social Scheme and the success of getting 5 new
employees through the Community Services Scheme, working on up to 40 projects in the community. We successfully ran a major
fundraising campaign for the Swansea/ Cork Ferry, which yielded the return of this much wanted Ferry. We have worked closely with
West Cork Rural Transport, rolling out the service twice weekly and at weekends for our locals and visitors alike. We have also
introduced the volunteer driver scheme here. Also the Community Council has succeeded in getting the highest percentage of
homes insulated and heating installed in this area through the Warmer Homes Scheme than any other area in West Cork. Our
environment was not forgotten by this Community Council with the introduction of the plastic and electrical recycling days in Goleen
which so many availed of, On road improvements, we have worked with the County Council on improving the Lissacaha road, the
Toormore to Ardravinna road widening at Toormore, Turn of the Lakes, and the Goleen relief road; also resurfacing was sought and
got for the Barracks road and the Harbour road; improvements have been made in Lowertown with the Replica Village, and new
stone name signs in Lowertown; also, we succeeded in getting Heritage Council funding for the restoration of the Barking Pot at
Goleen pier; we succeeded in getting the blue flag for Barleycove beach and green flags for Galley Cove and Ballyrisode beaches,
We also worked closely with the County Council in getting council houses for Goleen, which have been opened in the past 12
months. We successfully drew down Council grants, WC Development Partnership funding, HSE funding and o2 funding. We have
worked with the Caring Peninsula Project, which has benefitted the elderly in the community; we also introduced a charity shop in the
Community Centre, an office, broadband, a weekly newsletter. We purchased a new television for the Community Centre, a number
of new pedal carts for the Festival week, a projector. The pitch floodlighting was installed and improvements have been made to our
website. We facilitated the making of the film ‘The Runway’ in the area. These are just samples of what this voluntary community
group has achieved in 3 years. With the completion of the Community Centre almost ready, we have many more new ideas that will
benefit the community in the year ahead.
Festival The Summer Festival which is organised by the Community Council goes from strength to strength every year and what
started as a weekend event now runs for an eight day period in August. The festival seems to be enjoyed in equal measure by both
locals and visitors and its success is due in no small part to the great help which we have received from the numerous individuals
who help out in both the organizing and running of the festival and who are an integral part and essential to its continued success.
Goleen Community Centre The construction and completion of the Community Centre extension is nearing completion and we now
have a multi-purpose modern facility, which would rival any of its kind throughout the country. The new function rooms complement
the sports centre and we welcome both individuals and groups to enjoy the facilities now on offer in our Community Centre.
PLEASE USE YOUR VOTE!
LOTTO As regards funding, the weekly LOTTO run by the Community Council has proven to be a great success and this is due in
no little part to the Trojan efforts of the existing Community Councillors as well as our outside helpers who have made an invaluable
contribution to the running of same. Obviously, the LOTTO’s success is also due to the great support from the local community and
visitors to the area and we in the Community Council greatly appreciate that support. The weekly LOTTO is the main source of
income for the Community Council and without it, we wouldn’t be able to undertake the projects and the works outlined above.
Therefore, any money raised by the weekly LOTTO is ploughed back into the community. By continuing your support, you are not
only in with a chance to win some money, but you are also contributing to the betterment of the community as a whole.

We would like to say a very big thank you, to everyone who took part in the "family fun Run/walk" to Crookhaven at
New Year. It was a fantastic success, in every way, and we believe a good day was had by all. We raised €1400.00 for
the Irish Wheelchair Association. We hope to make this an annual event... So a very happy 2011, and lets hope next
years Run/Walk will be bigger and better. Thank you. Claire Barrett

Liam Lynch Fund (Eithne Lynch's seriously ill grandson) We had three fundraising events in Crookhaven over the Xmas period. At
the Carol Service Canon Paul Willoughby kindlylet the proceeds of the collection go towards the fund, this raised nearly €500.
Thank you very much Paul and all the Congregation. On the 29th we had a Quiz which was very well attended and between
entrance fees and the raffle we managed to raise €700. Thanks to Alison for organising. Our annual New Year's Day Swim was also
well attended [ We had about 20 hardy swimmers but at least a hundred enthusiastic onlookers/fans]Thankfully our local Coast
Guard were watching over the swimmers. Thanks to them. The swim raised the princely sum of €1020. We all think collecting 2220
Euros these days is very good going. Hopefully it will be of some help to Eithne's grandson and his Family. Many thanks to
everybody who participated or contributed. God Bless and Happy New Year from Crookhaven.. O’Sullivan’s Bar
