Algebra I: Common Core, Pearson, Boston, MA 2012
Description:
Algebra I is a required course for all regular education students at Atlantic City High School.
Emphasis is placed upon the development and understanding of algebraic skills and their use
with respect to generalization, application, and problem solving. Since for many students,
Algebra I represents their first endeavor at development of a logical, axiomatic system,
considerable emphasis will be given to why processes work and how they are related.
Placement in Algebra I Honors is based upon multiple criteria including Grade Eight Proficiency
Assessment (GEPA) scores, previous course grade, parent advocacy, and teacher
recommendation.
Goals:
Algebra I Honors is intended to be one of the cornerstones which will prepare students for future
courses in mathematics and science. In addition, the language of Algebra is used in a wide range
of career paths that Atlantic City students will pursue in the future. Many of the concepts
developed in this course will enhance all students’ logical reasoning abilities, decision making,
and critical thinking skills.

for 3 days straight and a quiz is being held on Friday. The homework pertaining to those 3
lessons will be due the day of the quiz. Any assignments handed in late will be counted for
partial credit. Students should keep up with all homework assignments in order to excel on all
assessments.
Unit Post Tests are given to assess a student’s progress during the entire marking period. The
post test will contain all chapters covered during that particular unit.
Quizzes are held to assess a student’s progress during the dissemination of a chapter’s topics. A
quiz will contain several lessons topic, but not an entire chapter. Therefore, the questions will be
more detailed, but fewer topics will be covered.
Tests will cover and entire chapter’s topics which can be extensive. Therefore, the questions will
be broader in order to cover more material.
Projects will be assigned throughout the marking period. These projects will assess a student’s
ability to complete assignments independently. At times projects will be completed in class, and
others will need to be completed at home. Projects will be explained and due dates will be given
