your requirements and ask any questions at 4pm on 18th March in the Savile
Room in City Hall.
If you are unable to attend the meeting and have any questions please email the
address above.
We look forward to seeing you!
Section 3 – If you need an arts worker
If you are using one of our arts workers it would be sensible if they worked directly
with us to order materials. They will know what materials they are hoping to work
with and the quantities needed.
Artistes to work with your school - Q20 Theatre has been responsible for
delivering the Lord Mayors’ parade for 12 years. During this time we have seen the
numbers of participants increase, and the standard of costumes and props created
with young people have been of an exemplary nature.
Involvement in the parade offers a special opportunity for pupils to work with talented
and experienced arts workers and often experience using materials that they may
not be familiar with. In addition the parade day is a very special experience where
they have direct involvement in a community event that supports our civic head. The
participants feel very special and valued, and the event is a highlight that they will
remember for a long time.
Q20 Theatre is able to provide artistes and assistants to work with your school in
creating costumes for the Lord Mayors’ parade. We recommend that a team of one
artiste and one assistant will be paid for 2 days that are allocated as follows:


2 half days in school with one class during which the pupils will create and
contribute substantially to making their own costume/head-dress.
The other day is allocated to the artiste and assistant to create a design, source
and buy materials, prepare any items necessary before the workshop in the
school, and attend to any finishing off that the costumes require.
We can provide arts workers that
 Design and make costumes for the children to wear
 Create gigantes from willow and tissue paper
 Create banners that are carried in the parade
If you would like to engage arts workers provided by Q20 Theatre, again please
contact gillie@q20theatre.co.uk .

found with alcohol may be asked to leave the Parade.

Creating Your Entry
The Lord Mayor’s Parade welcomes a range of entrants – This year’s theme is Film and you
can be flamboyant and colourful– whatever is important or representative of you or your
group.
Original and effective entries do not necessarily require big budgets. Some of the most
effective entries can be created through simple coordinated costumes, props or banners,
and original ideas. There is a budget of up to £4:00 per person to cover the cost of materials
used in making costumes or props. If you have an idea for a large scale piece please contact
us to discuss the budget
.
Entry can be in a range of formats.
Individual Entrants
You do not require a group to take part in the parade – many individual entrants have been
flamboyant and highly effective costumes.
Important Points



Ensure you can see – there will be no one there to guide you
Be weatherproof
Your costume/prop is not too heavy to walk the whole route
Small/Large Walking Groups
Whether you are a group of friends or a large community group, walking groups can make a
big impact by using simple costume, props, flags, banner or a routine.
It is important to create a visual identity and tell people who you are, particularly for larger
walking groups.
Straggling groups of people walking create less impact than a tightly formatted, evenly
spaced group, so think how you will move along the route.
Important points




Coordinated costumes – may be simply the same colour T-shirts/Flags
Establish a theme or identity
Evenly spaced walking
Use of banner, props or routines
Dancing/Marching Groups
You need to pace your routine so that it can keep up with the speed of the Parade, yet be
flexible to allow for changes in speed and prevent gaps in the Parade.
Potential health and safety risks have been identified as the result of gaps being allowed to
develop in the Parade, and you may be asked to cut short a routine if this happens. You will
be expected to comply with the requests of the Parade stewards.

Coordinated costumes – may be simply the same colour T-shirts

Evenly spaced walking
Use of banner, props or routines
Props, Flags & Banners
Props and banners can be used to identify your group or identify your theme. They can
create colour, humour and height to your entry – remember, many people’s view is often
restricted.
Important points





Do not make your prop or banner to heavy to be carried for the entire route.
Ideally, make them weatherproof.
If using flags, create a choreographed routine.
A wide range of items can be installed on poles and carried – papier-mâché objects
over wire frames, fruit or stuffed toys, plastic flowers, hats etc.
Flagpole or fishing rod holders round the waist make props, flags and banners easier
to carry.
Prohibited Articles

Fire, open flames, fireworks, flammable goods, welding, flares, sparklers are all
prohibited as they are liable to cause fire, explosion or injury to people and property.

Racist, sexist and homophobic material will not be allowed in the Parade.
