LAB 6: Genetics, Protein synthesis and Mutations
Most answers can be pulled out from your lab manual and results obtained during the lab. For some concepts, you
might need to check your book or Google the definition online!
TRANSCRIPTION AND TRANSLATION (PROTEIN SYNTHESIS)

Explain what “transcription” means. Where in the cell does this process take place? What is the final
product of this process?

Explain what “translation” means. Where in the cell does this process take place? What is the final product
of this process?

What is the difference between mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA?

How does the cell machinery know what aminoacid should go in the sequence? In other words, how is that
information presented in the mRNA for every aminoacid?

Define “codon” and “anticodon”. In what type of RNA are they located?

How does the cell machinery know where to start and stop making proteins?
MUTATIONS

Explain what is the result of a misssense, nonsense, or frameshift mutation

Will the change in one base in the DNA always change the aminoacid in the final protein? explain
