Unit Questions
Much like essential questions, these should be answered throughout the unit, and are based upon
three main sources, the photocopied chapter, teacher-led classroom activities, and the film “The
Hours.” Several of the questions are factual in nature, while a couple ask your opinion. Make sure
that you support both types of your answers with explanation and evidence from our class activities
and sources.
• Explain, as if to a student who has not take this class, the differences between ‘normal’ mood
swings and bipolar disorder or major depression.
• Compare and contrast Virginia Woolf’s decision to commit suicide and Laura’s decision to live
but abandon her family. Is one decision healthier? Is one decision more just?
• Choose two of the different approaches to therapy listed below and explain how they would
attempt to work with Virginia, Laura, and Clarissa.
Behavioral
Cognitive
Psychodynamic
Biochemical
• Predict what will happen next with Clarissa. Comment on at least one of her significant
relationships.
