ARTS & CULTURE
CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
Learn to apply black ink and/or water color to paint various subjects, including landscapes, flowers, birds,
plants and animals. Students will also add brush work in calligraphy for name and title. Required materials
(brush, paint, and paper) must be purchased by students.
PAINT LIKE THE MASTERS
Choose a Great Master’s painting that you love and want to have in your home. Using oils or acrylics, you
will be guided by the artist/teacher to replicate this painting using the grid and other techniques. This class
will be small with lots of individual attention. Color mixing will also be an important part of your painting.
Required materials (brush, paint, and canvas) must be purchased by students.
KIMEKOMI DOLL MAKING
Isako graduated from Tokyo Mataro Doll Academy in 1967. Since then, she has taught doll making to
numerous men, women, and children. Students will select their own model and be taught individually by
the instructor. Additional material fees vary depending on choice of dolls. Classes are held every third
Saturday of each month.
SIMPLE ASIAN CARDS
Crafting has been a lifelong passion for Norma, beginning with origami, then scrapbooking, and now
cardmaking. In this workshop, you will create three Asian-themed greeting cards, using beginning to
intermediate stamping and paper crafting techniques. Please bring your own scissors, adhesive (wet or dry),
tape runner, paper crafting double-sided adhesive).
COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS
SANSHOKU BENTO (THREE-COLORED BOXED LUNCH)
Bento (lunch) boxes have been enjoyed in Japan for hundreds of years. Anyone can make their own bento.
Learn how to make tasty Japanese three-colored boxed lunch in which three colors of ingredients are
arranged on top of rice.
ITALIAN COOKING
Learn how to make a basic Bolognese Sauce, a versatile meat based tomato sauce that is used in many
Italian dishes. The sauce will be served over a thin spaghetti or penne pasta, with salad and bread on the
side.
DANCE
BALLROOM DANCE FOR CHINESE SPEAKERS
Learn basic steps and variations of the Fox Trot, Waltz, Rumba, and more, in a casual and friendly
atmosphere! No experience necessary. Partners preferred, but not required. Drop-ins will be charged $6 per
class.
HULA DANCE (BEGINNER)
Learn basic hula steps and dance to choreographed music. Have fun learning about Polynesian culture
while you dance!
HULA DANCE (ADVANCED)
Learn more hula steps and integrate skills learned in beautifully choreographed pieces. Gain appreciation of
the Polynesian culture and each other. A great class to meet friends and socialize!
LINE DANCE (BEGINNER)
Learn the basic steps used in line dancing. Simple dances will be learned.
LINE DANCE (INTERMEDIATE)
Dance to a variety of beats: Waltz, Cha-Cha, Western, Ballroom, and more. A fun class with great people
and excellent music!
NIHON BUYOU (JAPANESE CLASSICAL DANCE)
Learn the fundamentals of Japanese classical dance, including how to dress in a kimono; basic terms and
etiquette; basic movements of hands, feet, body, neck, etc.; basic steps and expressive movements; use of
ougi (dancing fans).
LANGUAGE
BEGINNING MANDARIN CHINESE
Learn the phonetics of Mandarin Chinese using Hanyu Pinyin. Upon completion, students should be able to
grasp the basics and have a better understanding of the forming of sounds. Single and compound words are
introduced through pronunciation drills.
INTERMEDIATE MANDARIN CHINESE
Continue pronunciation drills with more single and compound words. Grammar and development
of sentences from simple to complex will be introduced.
JAPANESE CONVERSATION
This class focuses on Japanese conversation and vocabulary building. Word order, particles, and grammar
in simple sentences will be taught. Hiragana script is also included.
MUSIC
BEGINNING GUITAR
Are you a total beginner at the guitar? Or do you know a few chord shapes, but want to expand your
knowledge of the instrument? This Beginning Guitar Class will teach you everything you need to know to
start playing your favorite songs.
TAIKO FOR FUN
In this beginning class, you will learn the history and basics of Taiko.
SINGING
Did you always want to sing, but were afraid to try? Now is the time to dive in and find your voice. We
will do voice exercises, learn songs, and then have a karaoke practice session. Learn to sing your favorite
songs, but no need to worry about memorizing the words in this session.
PHOTOGRAPHY
BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY AND CINEMATOGRAPHY
This class will help you learn or get more out of your camera, camcorder, smart phone, etc. Learn the
differences in basic camera functions (Program mode, Aperture mode, Landscape mode, etc.) and when to
use them. Tips and techniques for recording video clips (available on most digital cameras) will be
explained and demonstrated. Strategies for getting the type of images you are interested in will be covered,
as well as on-line resources for additional information. Basic computer skills used for camera downloads
will be demonstrated or discussed.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
OPEN HOUSE: LIFELONG LEARNING COMPUTER CLASSES
Join us for an open house, check out the classroom, and try the computers. Our friendly computer
instructors will be available to answer your questions about upcoming classes. You can discuss one-on-one
which classes are best for you. You may also ask questions about your own computer and any specific
problems or issues you are having. Refreshments will be available outside the computer lab.
COMPUTER ASSISTANCE OR TUTORING
Work with an instructor to solve your problems using your own computer and software. Dates and times
are by appointment.
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
This class is designed for beginners or students with limited or no experience with computers. Learn about
computer hardware, system components, software and more! No prerequisites, just a desire to learn.
SKYPE CLASS
Use your computer to make internet calls to other computers for free and cheap online calls to landline and
mobile phones with Skype. Learn how to download Skype for free and use it to keep in touch with friends
and family.
WINDOWS 7 – BASIC
This class is for those who are new to computers or the Windows 7 Operating System. Learn how to use the
computer and the mouse to write and edit letters. Learn to create and organize files and folders on your
computer. This class also teaches you how to surf the Internet, send and receive e-mails. The lessons are
done in an easy step-by-step fashion. Don't be afraid of your computer. Use it!
WINDOWS 7 – INTERMEDIATE
This class is a sequel to the Windows 7 Basic class. The Windows 7 Intermediate class handles some of the
most useful, practical and fun components of Windows 7 Operating System. You will learn all about
computer security, creating user accounts, burning CDs and DVDs, and setting parental controls. In
addition, you will learn how to organize your photo collection and view your photos with Widows Photo
Viewer and how to use Windows Media Player to play Music CDs and movies.
WINDOWS 8 - BASIC
This class walks you through the basics of the Windows 8 operating system in an easy step-by-step manner.
Bring your own laptop and mouse (if preferred) and be amazed at how fast you will start having fun with
your computer with the new skills and information you gain.
MICROSOFT OFFICE WORD – EVENING CLASS
You have tons of Word documents. Could you use some timesaving techniques to help you work faster?
This course will provide you with tips and tricks using the ALT and CTRL keys, formatting, creating
tables, flyers, and documents using Word 2007/2010/2013. Learn how to work with the most essential
features in Word, create professional looking documents, and choose from different templates to create
your own cards or booklets.
MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL LEVEL I
Learn how to manage your personal finances with the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program. Keep track of
your rentals or manage your club’s mailing list. In this class you will understand how to enter data, labels
and formulas in a worksheet and present it in a meaningful way, such as in bar graphs and pie charts. Excel
can do all of your calculations automatically.
FILM/VIDEO EDITING - BEGINING
Use your digital camera or transform your old photographs or video clips into personal documentaries and
travelogues for playback on DVDs, YouTube, etc. This introductory class will show you the fun and easy
drag and drop technique of a popular and inexpensive software. Add music, voice over, sub-titles, text, and
other special audio & video special effects to spice up your recordings. Basic cinematography and editing
techniques will also be covered.
VIDEO AND SPECIAL PROJECTS EDITING - INTERMEDIATE
This class goes beyond the basics covered in the Beginning Film/Video Editing class. More time will be
spent on polishing and finishing your own personal projects into slick presentations that will amaze and
entertain your friends and family. The mechanics of cinematography and editing techniques will be further
discussed or reviewed again for those who have previously taken the Beginning Video Editing class.
INTERNET AND E-MAIL
Learn how to navigate the Internet and search for information more effectively. Do you know the
difference between Google, Bing or Yahoo? Learn to surf the WWW with confidence. Download free
music and software application safely. Learn tips on how to avoid viruses, malware and spyware.
INTRODUCTION TO FACEBOOK AND YOUTUBE
This introductory Facebook class will show you how to set up an account and login, manage your security
and group access rights, and create/edit your events, photos, notes, videos, etc. Reach out to your friends,
associates, and family in a safe environment, or even set up a separate entity page for social or community
purposes. YouTube, the second most popular search engine on the internet, and its connection to Facebook
will also be covered.
COMPUTER SECURITY
Keep your computer running smoothly and efficiently. Optimize Windows and clean up your hard drive.
Learn to protect your computer from viruses and spyware; manage the settings and clear history in Internet
Explorer; defrag the hard drive; use System Restore; use Windows Update; manage start-up programs and
back up your data. The class is suitable for users of Windows XP, Vista and 7
MAC TRAINING
Learn how to use basic features, such as accessing the Internet, using e-mail and organizing files and
folders. Get acquainted with some of the handy tools and apps included on the Mac that make it easy to
work with photos, video, and music. Change the look and feel of your Mac interface and learn how to set
preferences to make it even easier to work on your Mac.
LEARN TO WORK WITH YOUR iPAD
Get the most out of your iPad. Send and receive e-mails, surf the internet, make and keep notes, look up
addresses and maintain your calendar. The iPad tablet computer also comes with built-in applications for
listening to music and taking pictures and videos. You can customize your iPad by adding from thousands
of available applications from the App Store. Suitable for all versions of the iPad.
iPHONE WITH iOS 7
Learn to use the iPhone (3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 5C) with the new operating system iOS 7,
which is a substantial change from the previous version. Make calls, store contacts, use
the calendar, jot down notes, listen to music, send email, browse the internet and more.
Students must have one of the iPhone models listed above loaded with the new iOS 7.
HEALTH & FITNESS
FITNESS FOR LIFE
This class incorporates fun, low-impact dance routines combined with yoga and tai chi movements and it
highlights balance, flexibility, and weight training.
MOVEMENT THROUGH MUSIC
Moving to sound and rhythm comes naturally to us as children, but often the freedom of movement gets
stifled by physical or emotional conditions as we age. This class will support and encourage you to
re-discover the joy of “finding your own dance” regardless of your present condition. The many
benefits include improved strength, flexibility, and the overall sense of well-being.
STRETCH, STRENGTHEN AND THRIVE!
This class is designed for the needs and abilities of active older adults, who are interested in gaining or
maintaining mobility. These exercises will help participants maintain their cardiovascular health, muscular
endurance, and vitality and will enhance their range of motion and increase energy. The class consists of a
mix of full body stretches, body weight exercises, strength training, and active stretching.
ZUMBA GOLD
Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music and dance that creates a dynamic, exciting and effective
cardio workout. This Zumba class is designed for Zumba Fitness beginners and active older adults. It
addresses the anatomical, physiological and psychological needs specific to this population. It also helps
seniors to start their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. This class is for anyone who wants to join the
fitness-party!
BEGINNER SWIMMING CLASS
This beginner swimming class consists of eight 1-1/2 hour sessions and will teach basic water skills and
simple swimming strokes that will give you confidence in the pool and improve your overall fitness. Class
content will concentrate on skills such as floating, treading water, entering and exiting the water, holding
your breath while fully submerged, and freestyle (front crawl).
AQUA AEROBICS
Improve your muscular endurance and overall strength. The water provides buoyancy and, therefore, less
stress on your bones, joints and muscles. These exercises incorporate a variety of rhythmic body
movements and dance steps along with toning and stretching segments for a fun and complete workout.
TAI CHI/QI GONG
Learn the simplified 24-forms of Tai Chi, plus Qi Gong exercises, a healing art combining movement,
meditation, and visualization. Ideal for students new to Tai Chi.
BA DUAN JIN (THE EIGHT SECTION BROCADE QI GONG EXERCISES)
Ba Duan Jin is comprised of eight body movements that are relatively simple and can be practiced at any
age, place or time. It is also easy to remember, easy to learn and easy to train. This Qi Gong exercise is
based on Chan (Zen) Buddhism and traditional Chinese medicine theory. It satisfies the goal of balancing
yin and yang by regulating qi, strengthening tendons and improving bone strength.
EASY TAI CHI
Learn 24-form Yang Style Tai Chi in a slower pace. Experience the gentle flowing of Tai Chi and treat
your whole body to a gentle and relaxing workout.
BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE TAI CHI GONG
These exercises use the principle of chi flowing properly throughout the body to maintain the equilibrium
of yin and yang. Regular practice of these forms will develop better balance and flexibility, gain strength,
promote deep relaxation, and improve health. Beginning Tai Chi Gong class will also learn 24 Yang Style
Tai Chi and Yi Jin Jing-a traditional Health Qi Gong. Intermediate Tai Chi Gong class will start learning
Yang style Tai Chi Fan which is practiced in its health and exercise form.

FIRST AID
This is an American Red Cross First Aid certification class. It will prepare you to care for others during a
medical emergency until advanced medical personnel take over. Cost includes certificate upon successful
completion.
SELF DEFENSE FOR SENIORS
Today’s world is riddled with crime and senior citizens are often the victims. Some people see them as easy
targets. This does not mean that seniors are helpless. There are self-defense techniques that seniors can use
to protect themselves. This is not a Martial Arts class, and there will be no throwing or falling. Wear sweats
or comfortable clothing. If you have long fingernails, cut them or wear gloves to class.

This program provides up to 5 hours of respite or “break” to family members who care for loved ones with

TRIPLE-R ADULT DAY PROGRAM
A program of the City of Sacramento, Triple-R provides a full day of social and recreational activities to
older adults with physical and cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia.
CAREGIVER SUPPORT MEETING SPONSORED BY TRIPLE-R ADULT DAY
CARE PROGRAM
This is an opportunity for caregivers to get together and talk about pressing issues and concerns with aging,
as well as share experiences. Learn from the experts in the field.
FAMILY CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP
This group is a self-help group run by and for people with challenges/life changing situations involving
memory decline, such as dementia/Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The group’s
purpose is to provide emotional support, encouragement, and affirmation to caregivers of adult family
members.
PARKINSON’S ASSOCIATION SUPPORT GROUP
This support group provides resources, counseling, and support to family caregivers of individuals with
Parkinson’s.
THE SENIOR GEMS™
The Senior Gems™, Your Guide to Supporting Family Members with Dementia, is a video featuring Teepa
Snow. Teepa Snow is an occupational therapist and dementia expert with over 30 years of clinical
experience in the field of geriatrics and dementia care. This family-centered video provides an overview of
the impact of Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as techniques that make a difference.
UNDERSTANDING MEMORY LOSS, DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER’S
DISEASE: THE BASICS
This program will cover topics such as: symptoms and effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other
types of dementia; how Alzheimer’s affects the brain; causes and risk factors; how to find out if
it’s Alzheimer’s disease and the benefits of early detection; how to address a diagnosis of
Alzheimer’s disease; stages of the disease and treatment; hope for the future and ways the
Alzheimer’s Association can help.

Eating a variety of foods can help you get the nutrients that your body needs as you age. This workshop
will review healthy eating guidelines and nutrition tips for the special needs of older adults. Because older
adults are more vulnerable to food poisoning, the importance of food safety will be discussed. Learn how to
shop smart for the most nutritious food.
HEALTHY NUTRITION – TROOPS FOR FITNESS
Do you think you should be eating healthier, but do not know where to begin? Find out what foods are
great for you and have the highest nutritional value. Good nutrition complements exercise; make the most
of your journey to a healthy body. Healthy snacks provided. This program is made possible by a grant
from the Coca-Cola Foundation in conjunction with the City of Sacramento, Department of Parks and
Recreation, Neighborhood Services Division. Troops for Fitness employs veterans to teach fitness classes
to the community.
BREAST & CERVICAL HEALTH
Every Women Counts offers women education on Breast & Cervical Cancer prevention, early detection,
and FREE screening services. Learn valuable information for yourself, loved one, family, friend or
caregiver on: a) Risk factors; b) Importance of early detection; c) Eligibility requirements to qualify for free
screening and/or treatment.

tips on how to avoid these dangerous situations.

charges are unnecessary, and ways you can save money. If you are thinking of dropping your traditional

INTRODUCTION TO ACC
Do you want to learn more about ACC and the programs and services offered at ACC Senior Services
Center? In this Introduction to ACC, we will provide an overview of ACC Senior Services Center, along
with ACC Nursing Home, ACC Greenhaven Terrrace, and Meals on Wheels by ACC. In addition, for
volunteers, who are interested in representing ACC at community events and health fairs, we will discuss
tips for doing outreach. We are always looking for volunteers to help staff the ACC booth at many outreach
events throughout the year, such as the Pacific Rim Street Fest. This is the perfect opportunity to learn
about ACC and find out how you can let others know about what we do.
5 WISHES: CALIFORNIA’S ADVANCED MEDICAL DIRECTIVES
This educational workshop discusses your rights and medical decisions. California and Federal laws give
every competent adult, 18 years and older, the right to make their own health care decisions, including the
right to decide what medical care or treatment to accept, reject, or discontinue. Learn about a free legal
document which gives your medical decisions a voice when you may not have the ability to express them.
EXCURISIONS
THE ART OF GAMAN: ARTS AND CRAFTS FROM THE JAPANESE
AMERICAN INTERNMENT CAMPS, CALIFORNIA MUSEUM
A showcase of more than 120 artifacts made by Japanese Americans while interned at camps during WWII,
this traveling exhibit explores the creativity and ingenuity of internees as well as the Japanese concept of
gaman, or to endure the unbearable with patience and dignity. Works, ranging from tools, everyday objects,
illustrations, paintings, furniture, toys, clothing and more, are presented with historical content through
photographs, documents and films in the exhibit.
AARP MATURE DRIVING COURSE
This 2-day/8-hour course is open to all seniors. Individuals who have attended before are also welcome.
You will be given a workbook, a current copy of the DMV Booklet, and be awarded a certificate of
completion at the end of the course. The certificate is sent to the AARP and may provide a three-year
discount on your automobile insurance.
