I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! While winter is
just starting to rear its ugly head with colder temperatures, we are for now
missing out on the snow. However, some adults and most children would love to
see a good snow, so we will keep our fingers crossed for one good snowfall.
The staff and I would like to say a huge “Thank You” to the PTO for our Christmas
treat. We truly appreciate all that you do for us.
Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Amanda Call and Ms. McKenzi Davis to EWMS.
Mrs. Call will be finishing the year for Mrs. Wells; and Ms. Davis will finish the year
for Mrs. Cleary. Mrs. Wells’ family will be relocating due her husband’s military
position; and Mrs. Cleary will begin a new position as an assistant principal at
CWMS.
With the start of the second semester, we also begin planning and preparing for
the next school year. On January 7, all 7th graders will bring home a letter with
information regarding Math I next year. Parents should read this information
carefully and call with any questions. Parents must opt in for their students to be
tested in order to determine placement in Math I for the 2016-17 school year. All
7th grade students will not automatically be tested. Also this month, 8th grade will
take interest surveys to help with high school registration. They will take the
survey on January 11. On January 13, 8th grade will visit WCC and the Wilkes
County Schools Early College High School. Eighth graders will have the
opportunity to apply for admission and interview for the Early College High School
this spring. We will also have a parent night on January 28 with more information
on the Early College High School.
Congratulations to Ashley C (8th grade) for being the EWMS Spelling Bee winner!
Ashley will represent our school at the county spelling bee on January 26. Cindy T
(7th grade) was the runner up. Congratulations and good luck Ashley!
Congratulations to Camron S and Dylan W (7th grade) for receiving Honorable
Mention at the Regional Science Fair held at ASU on December 15.
Congratulations to the following EWMS Soil and Water winners:
6th grade essays: Grady H, Laci A, and Anna P
6th grade slideshow: Annie W and Ryan W
7th grade speeches: Taylor D and Kayla D
8th grade speeches: Katelyn D and Charity S
We continue to have CHAMPION readers at EWMS! The number of students who
have reached and are exceeding the “One Million Word” read club is growing.
We are looking forward to these students and more going to a Winston-Salem
Dash game in the spring.
The teachers will be sending out At-Risk letters in the coming weeks for any
student who may be at-risk for not passing End-of-Grade Assessments in reading,
math, and/or science. I encourage you to stay in frequent communication for the
remainder of the year with your child’s teacher if you receive a letter. Again,
please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have questions about
anything going on at school.
Mrs. Burchette
