Thank you to our Castlebridge community (staff, students and
families) for raising $923.60 to support the United Way.
As you may know, Castlebridge is a Gold Level Eco-School. As a part of this initiative we want to reduce waste. Less than half of what we put
in the garbage actually belongs there. School lunches are a major source of waste in Ontario – the average student’s lunch generates a
total of 30 kilograms of waste per school year. One way to reduce waste is by renewing our commitment to bring litter-lunches to school.
Our goal is to have Castlebridge lunches be entirely litter-less. A Litter-less Lunch is packed using reusable containers rather than disposable
bags, disposable containers and packaging or single serving items. You will find that although it takes a little more work to pack a litter-less
lunch, in the long run, these lunches are healthier and will save you money! Come on Castlebridge – let’s work together to bring litter-less
lunches, and boomerang our compost home. A boomerang lunch is a lunch that has every piece of it returned to its source. In other words,
everything in the lunch goes back home at the end of the day. No matter if it is leftover food, containers, recyclables or garbage, it all goes
back. Yes, even the garbage. Please help your child pack Boomerang lunches every day. Help create awareness around recycling and
encourage and promote the use of reusable containers and utensils.
We CAN make a difference! We believe that engaging students in small environmental initiatives can have a big impact. As we try to model
environmental best practices for our students, we remind families that we do not provide plastic utensils in the office. Less and less
frequently students come down during lunch for a fork or a spoon, in the same way we have gotten use to bringing our own reusable bags to
stores, parents need to provide reusable cutlery in their children’s lunches. By doing so, you completely avoid the process of creating a single
use item, thus no solid waste is created. But solid waste isn’t the only thing that’s wasteful about plastic cutlery. Plastic cutlery also takes
energy and water to create. Help us to create the environmental champions the world needs to help make positive changes. And by doing so,
we will educate generations of children about why the right attitude towards the environment is so important. Thanks for helping our school
and world reduce waste. “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” David Brower.
