Systems Technician
Class Summary/Primary Function
The Systems Technician is primarily responsible for the end user support of the City’s technology infrastructure.
Such support includes the maintenance, operation and troubleshooting of any associated systems, devices,
cabling, hardware and software, as well as recommendations about future planning and development of
resources.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Illustrative Only)









Secures, maintains and troubleshoots all City technology infrastructure and assets including, but not limited
to, personal computers, servers, security systems, network infrastructure, and related software applications.
Assists with maintenance and operation of network infrastructure consisting of copper, fiber, and wireless
equipment and software across multiple internal and external networks both inside and outside City
properties; insures adherence to network policy and procedures; assists in the development and
recommendation of new policies and procedures as needed.
Provides input and assists in the designing, planning, and implementation of various City information
technology (IT) projects; identifies solutions to IT problems or needed IT enhancements and makes
recommendations for implementation.
Works with the Technology Director, Systems and Network Administrator(s), and City Staff to assess IT
goals and needs; recommends workable IT solutions to meet established goals or address needs and
problems.
Provides input as requested for the development of technology, communications, network, and security
policies.
Maintains compliance with adopted technology, communications, network, and security policies.
Provides input as requested regarding the management of the City’s technology infrastructure and assets.
Periodic domestic travel required in normal course of job performance.
Performs in a variety of settings from indoor to outdoor.

Classification Requirements:
Knowledge of:
 Considerable knowledge of Windows platforms and applications including; Active Directory, Windows
server and client operating systems and Windows Office Suites; data and network communications
operational concepts; hardware configurations and capabilities; data backup/storage; system security;
hardware and software troubleshooting.
 Working knowledge of basic internet functions, i.e., e-mail, ftp; HTML and web page design; online
services and alternatives; basic web server and file system maintenance processes and procedures;
networking procedures and processes; various types of inter-related equipment, specifications and
compatibilities; system programming requirements and software contingencies.
 Some knowledge of virtual environment design and operation, electronic document creation and storage
systems, proper index methodology; file conversion issues; the legal environment related to City operations;
benefit costing procedures; computer applications and programs utilizing spreadsheets, statistics, etc.
 Considerable skill in use of computers, client side systems and software; operation of office equipment
including menu driven personal computer systems, printers, photocopying machines, and optical scanners,
etc.

Ability to:
 Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; make basic decisions where established procedures do
not always apply; perform complex analytical functions; operate personal computer and apply various
program applications related to word processing, spread sheets and presentations; develop effective working
governmental administrators, programmers, and system maintenance personnel; effectively manage
workplace stress related to time deadlines, work pace demands, shifting priorities, and rapid changes within
the information technologies industry.
 Analyze system and equipment needs.
 Operate hand and power tools, electronic testing equipment, and related specialized computer installation,
maintenance, and repair equipment.
 Produce and maintain accurate and legible reports and documents.
 Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, state agencies, local
governments, contractors, co-workers, and the public under sometimes stressful conditions.
 Interpret and apply complex laws, regulations, standards and policies.
 Analyze and appropriately solve problems and resolve conflicts.
 Maintain a professional demeanor at all times;
 Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of timesensitive deadlines;
 Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
 Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or
oral instructions.
 Discern when situations require extra initiative and be willing to accept extra responsibility when necessary
to ensure essential City systems operations or to avoid systems failure or downtime.
Minimum Acceptable Experience and Training



Graduation from a community or technical college with a Certification or Degree in a Technology related
field; and
Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in systems or network administration and
maintenance; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities
necessary to perform the duties of this job.
Special Qualifications:


Willingness to work at a help desk without any direct hands-on or on-site activities with PC users;
Valid driver’s license.

stooping, kneeling, stretching, light digging, and other physical exertions including performing tasks
involving hand/wrist/arm movements.
