CLASS TITLE: CORRECTIONAL MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - CERTIFIED
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is medical services work in a correctional medical facility, including emergency medical care that is
not performed under the technical direction of a physician during a shift, that requires certification as
an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic. The employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this
class must spend a minimum of 75 percent of their time performing duties which involve contact with
patients/inmates in a correctional or forensic facility or institution.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Assists a physician or nurse in providing emergency health services in life threatening medical
emergencies including suicide prevention.
Assists physicians or registered nurses in the delivery of direct patient care within a hospital,
clinic, or infirmary.
Administers prescribed first-aid treatment at site of emergency.
Provides medical facility personnel with information related to victim's vital statistics and
circumstances of emergency.
Maintains medical and communication equipment and replenishes first-aid equipment and
supplies.
Assists professional medical personnel in advanced emergency treatment administered at a
medical facility.
Screens inmates at sick call in accordance with standing orders under the supervision of a
physician and/or registered nurse.
Participates in the screening and psychological/psychiatric referral of inmates with mental
disorders.
Administers medication in unit dose under professional supervision.
Administers routine inoculations as prescribed under professional supervision.
Oversees housekeeping activities of the hospital, clinic, or infirmary.
Maintains records on patients, equipment, and drugs.

Changes sterile dressings; gives enemas; takes and records temperatures, pulse, respiration and
blood pressure.
Maintains examination rooms and equipment in good order to ensure safety and sanitation.
Collects samples for routine laboratory examination.
Orders medications and supplies and maintains inventory.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies normally used in providing health services.
Ability to communicate medical information effectively to patients, staff members, or to other
concerned persons.

Ability to analyze and interpret medical data.
Ability to follow medical instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and
others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic in accordance with Florida
Statute 401 and six months of experience in providing health support services in a hospital,
clinic, infirmary, nursing or convalescent home, or ambulance or rescue service.
