VACANCY: DIRECTOR (5-YEAR FIXED-TERM POSITION) – PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR
Aim of position: To achieve the goals of the research entity and the faculty within the University’s research and innovation strategy
Responsibilities:

Implementation and management of a strategic research plan

Supervision, innovation and initiation of research programmes

Acquisition of funding, facilities and equipment

Organisation and coordination

Planning and organising of marketing of research expertise

Selection of researchers

Planning of staff structures

Ensuring high-quality research outputs

Management of the engagement of master’s degree and doctorate students

Effective liaison and marketing

Personal development
Minimum requirements:

PhD in Physiology with speciality in Cardiovascular Physiology or equivalent qualification or a MBChB degree with applicable
specialist experience in the field of Cardiovascular Physiology

Approximately five years’ experience in post-graduate training (master’s degree and PhD) and research in cardiovascular
disease

Approximately five years’ experience and involvement in an established research programme in epidemiological and clinical
research regarding non-communicable diseases

Approximately three years’ proven management experience

A track record of research activities, including reviewed publications that meets the criteria of the NWU for Associate
Professor and Professor

Established international network with experts in hypertension

Clinical and epidemiological research in the field of non-communicable diseases

In-depth knowledge of research methodology

A proven and extensive publication record, especially over the past five years, and acknowledgement in a citation index

A proven record of attendance of relevant national and international conferences

A proven record of the supervision of master's degree and doctoral students

An NRF rating – otherwise the undertaking to achieve it within two years’ time

Proof of inputs with the initiation of research projects

Proof of the generation of research funds for research projects, nationally and internationally

Ability to recruit post-doctoral associates as well as visiting researchers

Excellent leadership skills, as well as the ability to function effectively as part of a team

Ability to think strategically and handle specialist and research supervision and management in the research entity

Recognition in the subject field and community as expert and leader

Excellent interpersonal skills

Proven management abilities

Good communication skills

Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
