Welcome! The Division of Medical Education provides centralized support for
educational activities common to all levels and types of pediatric training in the
Department of Pediatrics. It supports the development of excellence and
innovation in teaching and provides innovative and efficient methods to manage
information and assessment data associated with training. Our goal is to foster a
community of educators that provides the most innovative, efficient, and highest
quality pediatric education in the country.
We are very proud of our tradition of training outstanding pediatricians who
go on to have distinguished careers. Our graduates conduct basic, clinical
and translational research that improves the health of children in our own
country and around the world. They hold leadership positions in academic
medicine, large health care organizations, medical societies and public
health departments, where they help shape the future of medicine in this
country and work to reduce health disparities. They teach, develop new
educational curricula, and edit major pediatric textbooks that help to set the
national agenda for pediatric education. Most importantly, our graduates
are outstanding clinicians who care for children in settings ranging from
quaternary care critical care units to outpatient clinics in underserved
communities.
Our vision is to train outstanding clinicians and leaders who advance the health
of infants, children and adolescents throughout the world. We accomplish this by
providing an intellectually stimulating, innovative, and supportive environment
that fosters the development of clinical skills, individual passions, and a sense of
inquiry and social responsibility. To maintain the rich and productive learning
environment necessary to achieve this vision, we strive to attract a diverse group
of trainees with a broad range of backgrounds, interests, talents, career goals,
and a demonstrated record of leadership, achievement, and intellectual curiosity.
The UCSF School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics is home to 78 fellows in
a variety of highly regarded subspecialty training programs. Our department is
also proud of the extensive support we provide through Fellows' College, a
program of professional development workshops for UCSF pediatric fellows in
the areas of career development, research, teaching, education and leadership.
We have two residency programs (Categorical and PLUS), three clinical tracks
(Primary Care, Critical Care and General) and four pathways (Molecular
Medicine, Clinical and Translational Science, Global Health Scholars, and Health
Professions Education) available to you to enrich your training. The two
programs are a full three years in duration and you can only enter them through
the NRMP match. The Categorical program provides broad training for careers in
primary care or subspecialty pediatrics, while the PLUS program couples
outstanding clinical training with leadership skill development to produce
graduates who focus on the needs of underserved children. The purpose of a
clinical track is to allow residents to explore and build skills in a particular area of
clinical pediatrics. Tracks are for exploration and by no means should be
considered obligate career commitments. Pathways are designed to develop a
specific set of skills that could be useful across a broad range of clinical areas.
We think of Pathways as a way for residents to pursue and build upon their
individual interests and passions or as a way to explore new interests and
passions.
Our goal is to be a training program that allows you to pursue your passion in
pediatrics while developing outstanding clinical and leadership skills. We have
tremendous resources to help you achieve that, including the most important
resource: a richly diverse group of talented and creative residents, fellows,
faculty, nurses, and other health professionals.
Please see the Residency and Fellowship listings for more information on
training programs and application procedures.
Enjoy the online "tour" of our training program, and I look forward to the
possibility of meeting you in the future. I hope you will seriously consider UCSF
for the next phase of your training!
