It is the goal of the art program to provide students with a journey of artistic discovery for creative self
expression and personal fulfillment while using right brain functions considered essential for tomorrow’s
leaders, inventors, thinkers, and artists.
This course is for students who show an interest in 3D art/Ceramics and have a desire to create at a high
conceptual and technical level. Students will use a variety of materials including clay, paper, plaster, found
objects, and basic art materials to create functional and non functional pieces.
During the course of the semester basic sculpture and ceramic techniques will be introduced
Students will explore basic techniques and skills in functional and decorative hand built and wheelthrown pottery construction and sculpture. Emphasis will be on basic construction techniques and
materials as well as basic procedures in glazing and firing natural clay in an electric kiln.
Students will discuss, analyze, and critique artwork and hold an understanding of the history of sculpture and
ceramic forms and processes from multiple cultures.
*All students taking this class need to have taken Art 1 and scored a C or higher.
*There is a $15 lab fee to help offset costs of this course.
Attendance:
The majority of class time will be spent in a lab setting working independently under instruction and
supervision. Consequently, students who are absent from class are expected to make up all missed
work in a timely manner after school as per instructor’s discretion. It is the student’s responsibility to
see the instructor in regards to making up missing work and/or class time missed.

Course Objectives:
Students will:
Display correct room, clay, and sculpture procedures and techniques in creating/completing artwork.
Use artistic foundations to assemble works of art with an understanding of the elements and principles and
course vocabulary.
Use technical skills in creating multiple sculptural and ceramic pieces showing artistic intent.
Use artistic processes to revise and reflect artwork based on artistic intent, critiques, and feedback.
Develop an understanding of the history of ceramics and sculpture as it relates to multiple cultures.

Ceramics and Sculpture Learning Targets
Students will be able to show understanding and completion of the following learning targets by the end of the
semester.
Unit Packet Learning Targets
Students will start the semester with a packet including all vocabulary and reflection papers needed to take
them to the end of the semester. For each unit of students are required to complete unit vocabulary and
planning before starting their unit project. After they have followed the correct construction techniques to
complete their projects students will complete their reflection piece and turn both that and their projects in for
a grade.
Learning Targets
(Note: Project sequence may vary)
Week 1- Introduction to class,
Students will need to learn and show understanding of the stages of
clay and the four ceramic construction techniques used in procedures,
safety, and clay building techniques used during the semester.
Week 2- Hand Built/Modeling
Complete a stamp signature for use on all ceramic projects created

though the course of the semester. Use correct construction
techniques for strong craftsmanship. Students need to show proof of
modeling knowledge and practice with the stages of clay.
Week 3-6 Slab Construction
Week 7-10 Coil Construction
Project vocabulary: Slab, Score, Slip, Texture, Slump/Drop Mold,
Piercing, Impressing, Incising, Extrusion, Drawing, Applied Decoration,
Paddling/Beating, Combing.
Student will construct a Slab built piece using proper construction
techniques and strong craftsmanship.
Project vocabulary: Coil, Swelling, Extruding, Welding, Templates,
Paddling/Beating, Scraffito.
Student will construct a Coil piece using proper construction
techniques and strong craftsmanship. .
Week 11-13 Extruded Clay ConstructionProject vocabulary: Extrusion, Welding, Slip, Score, Foot, Neck
Student will construct an extruded piece using proper construction
techniques and strong craftsmanship.
Week 14-17 Research Choice Project/ Project vocabulary: Review previous
Wheel Thrown
Student will complete a research paper on an artist they will be
inspired by to complete their final ceramic project. Using proper
construction techniques from one of the Five techniques introduced
throughout the course of the semester they will complete a piece
showing strong craftsmanship.
Students will turn in their final projects with a complete research paper
and reflection.

-Plaster Tile Relief
Project Vocabulary: Balance, Rhythm, Form, Space, Functional, NonFunctional, Repetition, Movement, Assemblage.
Students will use found object to create a sculpture showing
knowledge and use of the project vocabulary terms. Students will
complete and participate in a class critique and self reflection.
Project Vocabulary: Form, Space, Cast, Balance
Students will show knowledge of project vocabulary and sculpture
construction techniques to construct a sculpture using Paper Mache.
Project Vocabulary: Relief, Line, Repetition, Movement, Contrast
Students will show knowledge of project vocabulary to complete a
plaster relief tile.
