London’s English Baroque
Day tour, Thursday 1 October 2015, meet 10.30 am St Paul’s Deptford
Explore the architecture of Sir Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor
and their contemporaries
Local historian and U3A lecturer John Moses will lead a tour for The Friends of St
Anne’s Church, Kew and their friends, exploring key English Baroque sites in
south-east London.
The tour will include:
St Paul’s Deptford, a little-known jewel of English Baroque designed by Thomas Archer, also
the architect of St John, Smith Square
St Alfege, Greenwich, rebuilt by Nicholas Hawksmoor
Greenwich Palace, birthplace of Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I
Queen Mary’s Hospital for Seamen, commissioned by Queen Mary II in 1694 and designed
by Sir Christopher Wren with the assistance of Nicholas Hawksmoor and John Vanbrugh
After lunch in Greenwich, the tour optionally includes:
The Queen’s House, designed by Inigo Jones for Queen Anne, consort of James I
The Royal Observatory, founded in 1675 by Charles II
Meet at St Paul’s Deptford at 10.30 am, Thursday 1 October (close to Deptford mainline railway
station).
Tickets: £20.00, travel and lunch excluded. For those going by public transport, there are trains
from Cannon Street to Deptford every ten minutes.
