Welcome to the Year 6 Spring Newsletter.
As we begin the spring term, preparations for SATs and transition to high schools are in our minds. This
newsletter will give you details of what your child will be studying this year as well as tips for how you can
help at home during this period of their education.
English
 Most children are taught in their class sets; some children work in an additional set with Miss Jones.
This set benefits from additional adult support.
We will be studying a range of different types of writing. This term we will be looking at figurative language,
argument and discussion texts, instructions, explanations as well as a range of different fiction genres.
Each class has a daily guided reading session. As well as guided reading sessions, each child has a
weekly library session. We ask you to encourage your child to read their library book at home and to
remember to return it to school.
Mathematics
 Children are taught in ability sets
During the first part of the term, we will be revising place value and the four operations – addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division. We then move on to time, units of measure, fractions, decimals,
percentages and data handling. All sets will be working on improving the rapid recall of multiplication facts.
Knowing the times tables makes many areas of numeracy much easier - so please help and encourage
your child to practise these at home. It is also helpful to talk to your child about units of measure, eg
centimetres, kilograms, litres etc and to encourage them to tell the time using analogue as well as digital
clocks
Other areas of the curriculum
Our topic for this term is Maya Civilisations. We will be finding out about the geography of Central America
and aspects of daily life for ancient Maya people. Science and Technology Fortnight will be between
Monday March 8 and Friday 18 March. We will be making concept boxes with moving cams
