Management (NSBM) and congratulations on
choosing to study in this diverse learning community.
At NSBM we are committed to prepare you to face
the dynamic environment of the 21st century. As
student you are in important aspect of our
community of scholars and we look forward to your

National School of Business Management
National School of Business Management (NSBM) is
the degree school of National Institute of Business
Management (NIBM). NSBM is a fully owned
subsidiary of NIBM, Which offers undergraduate and
postgraduate degree programs in the fields of
Management, Computing and Engineering.
Upon recognition of contemporary trends in
technology and globalization, NSVM has designed
programs which take an innovative approach to
higher education in order to prepare the youth to
face upcoming challenges in the world.
NSBM, the business school of Sri Lanka will integrate
innovation, entrepreneurship with a culturally and
ethnically
diverse
workforce,
international
engagement of expertise in the fields of Management,
Computing and Engineering. NSBM will design world
class degree programs integrating leadership, ethics,
global thinking, core management skills and cuttingedge technological innovations. It mainly focuses on
producing graduates and postgraduate professionals
in the fields of Management, Computing and
Engineering.
NSBM as defined by its mission is determined to
create a prosperous society through education,
learning and research. NSBM will be driven under the

themes of innovation, entrepreneurship, technology
and globalization to direct the country towards a
knowledge-based globalized economy, while creating
synergies with existing bodies of knowledge taking

NSBM Library
The Library is the backbone of the research and
learning activities of National School of Business
Management. The use of library resources is vital for
pursuing study and research. It is a basic part of the
institute and designed to gather information,
research, and curriculum needs of its students,
faculty and staff members. It has comprehensive
collections to meet the needs of its users. The Library
provides a variety of services designed to support
students, faculty members and staff members of
National School of Business Management. The library
Management system is going to be automated.
Professionally trained personnel are responsible for
the care of NSBM Library and its contents, including
the selection, processing, and organization of
materials
and
the
delivery
of
information,
instructions, and loan services to meet the needs of
its users.

NSBM Library Membership
Library Membership, Registration and Borrowing
facility
Library membership is required to enjoy the
borrowing facilities of the library resources. There
are two membership categories that are active at the
NSBM Library.
1. Staff Members
2. Registered Students
Staff Members
NSBM library membership is open to all categories of
permanent and temporary staff members of the
NSBM. (Academic, Academic Support, Administrative
and non academic) Staff members may register by
submitting the duly completed membership form
with following documents.


Copy of National Identity Card
Copy of the letter of appointment issued by
the Institute

Consultants/ Visiting lecturers who are seeking
library membership should make a refundable
deposit to the cashier and the receipt to be submitted
to the library with duly completed membership form
and above mentioned documents.
(Membership forms are available at the library
counter.)

Registered Students
Registered students of the NSBM automatically
became members of the NSBM library and are
entitled to all the ground facilities such as reference,
photocopying, inquiry services etc. However for the
book borrowing facility students may register after
making a refundable deposit to the cashier and
submitting the receipt along with the following
documents to the library, and duly completed
membership form.




Permanent Reference books/ journals/ magazines/
newspaper/ news clippings/rare works/ dissertations/
reports and confined materials are not offered for loan,
but may be used and make photocopied within the
library premises only.

Library tickets are not transferable. The holder of
library tickets is responsible for any library material
issued under such tickets and therefore should
protect them with utmost care. Use of the library
tickets of another person is a punishable offence.
The loss of library tickets should be reported to the
librarian immediately. Duplicate copies can be
obtained upon the payment of Rs. 50.00 replacement
charge.
Clearance
The refundable deposit could be claimed back by the
students by producing library cards along with a
letter addressed to the librarian, on completion of the
course they registered for or on the termination of
the studentship, having returned all materials
borrowed from the library.
Borrowing Rules
Important
The Student identity card must be produced to the
circulation counter to borrow books.
Renewals
Books borrowed by users can be renewed for
another two weeks if another user has not reserved
the items. To renew such a book the user should
produce the item at the circulation counter on or
before the due date.

Renewal of material will be done only once. Overdue
books or the materials from the reference collections
will not be renewed.
Reservations
Reserving and borrowing new additions (Displayed
new additions) can be borrowed by reserving them
in the library.
Recall of Books
The librarian may recall books at any time and the
borrower must return books immediately when
called to do so.
Lost / Damaged Books
It is the responsibility of the borrower to protect
library materials borrowed from the Library.
A letter addressing to the Librarian is required for
replacement or compensation for lost item
mentioning the actual reason(s).
Any damages or loss of library materials has to be
reported immediately.
In such situations the borrower must replace the
lost book/CD/DVD-ROM by a new and unused copy
of the same author(s), title, and edition. The old
edition can be replaced by the latest edition. Or,
Compensation must be paid as determined by the
library authority.

Replacements/ Compensation procedure for lost or
damaged items should be completed within next
seven days after placing letter.
Overdue Charges
Fine for overdue are calculated including
holidays from the date mentioned on the due slip of
the library material. If borrower failed to return
borrowing items on due date:



A fine of Rs.10/- per day will be imposed for
each text book after due date till the return of
the book.
A fine of Rs.50/- per day will be imposed in
respect of Reference books borrowed for
over-night use and not returned by
9.00a.m.the following day.
All payments should be made to the
circulation desk and the receipt should be
produced at the circulation counter.
Collection
Lending
The lending collection contains verity of books and
audio visual material. They consist of comprehensive
subject coverage to cater to the learning needs of the
students and the staff of the NSBM. Most of them fall
into
Management,
Information
Technology,
Multimedia and Interior Design. All registered users

can borrow the library material available in the
lending section. The fiction collection is located in left
corner side in the library.
Reference
The Reference collection contains important text
books recommended by the teaching faculty and
essential reading materials which are limited in
number. This collection is too housed with lending
collection. Reference books can be identified with red
color “R” label on the spine of book. Reference books
are issued from 05.00 to 05.30p.m for overnight use.
The reference collection of the borrowed materials
should be returned to the library by 09.00 a.m. on the
following day.
Permanent Reference
The Permanent Reference collection contains a wide
range verity of permanent reference materials such
as encyclopedias, Dictionaries, data books and
important text books recommended by the teaching
faculty and essential reading materials which are
limited in number. This collection is too housed with
lending collection. Permanent Reference books can
be identified with red color “PR” label on the spine of
book. This collection is available for reference only.
Any material required will be allowed to be
photocopied.

Periodical Collection
Journals are available for the use in the library only.
Photocopies of the journal articles can be obtained
from the library, subject to the library regulations
and the provisions of the copyright law of the
country. This contains both current and back issues
of periodicals which are arranged in alphabetical
order.
Thesis & Dissertation Collection
NSBM library has a good collection of thesis
completed by BSc, MSc students. This collection is
available for reference only.
Multimedia
Various multimedia materials on academic, cultural,
art and documentary fields are housed in the library.
Copies of such materials are available for borrowing.
Newspapers
Daily newspapers such as The Daily News, Divaina,
Lankadeepa etc. are available for reference only. Any
article required will be allowed to be photocopied.
Archival Collection
All materials such as handbooks, by-laws, conference
proceedings, prospectus etc. published by the
National School of Business are included in this

collection. This collection is available for reference
only.
Past Papers
The library maintain a past paper collection. Any past
paper required will be allowed to be photocopied in
the library premises.
Services
Lending
All registered students and staffs can borrow the
library material available in the lending section.
Books are loaned for a period of two weeks.
Reference
The Reference collection contains important text
books recommended by the teaching faculty and
essential reading materials which are limited in
number. Reference books are issued from 03.00 to
05.30p.m for overnight use. The reference collection
of the borrowed materials should be returned to the
library by 09.30 a.m. on the following day.
Inter Library Loan
Inter Library Loan facility is provided to any member
of Academic staff of the NSBM Library. If you need a
book or journal article which is not available within

the NSBM library system, we will make an
arrangement to borrow it from another library.
Computer Facility
There are 04 computers available in the library with
Internet Capabilities. This service is available during
the regular library operating hours. Each login allows
up to one hour of use. A patron may use 120 minutes
a day on library computers. The 120 minutes can be
split up in any way among the different computers
during the day. When a user's time is up and there
are other PCs free, the user can use that computer.
Library Seating
Limited seating space is available in the library for
study and research purposes only.
Seats in the library should not be reserved for anyone
by placing books and other items on the tables and
chairs.
It is regrettable to inform that the library seats are
not for preparing assignments, discussions and
personal work etc.
Photocopying Services
Full information about the photocopying service and
copyright Act are available with the Librarian.

The Photocopying machine is located in the library
for students/staffs to get their photocopies of the
reference materials available in the library.
Services for the users special needs
Retrieval of Material
Upon request, library staff will assist with the
retrieval of books and other materials, and with the
use of electronic and other bibliographic resources.
Special Assistance
Users requiring other special assistance should check
with the staff at the Circulation Counter on 011
5288827.
Book Classification System
Catalogues and Classification schemes
Standard classification scheme called Dewey Decimal
Classification (DDC) is used in the library. This is
used in libraries world wide. This system is a used for
placing books on library shelves giving a specific
location to every material for easy tracking and to
return it its specified place.
There are ten main classes in this system and each
divided into ten subcategories and each subdivision
has further divided in to another 10 classes, forming
999 classes.

General Library Rules
All readers must adhere to the Institute and the
Library rules and regulations. Any disorderly or
improper behavior or breach of regulations will
render the reader or borrower concerned liable
for suspension of the Library facilities or
disciplinary action decided by the Institute.
General Rules

The library is open to all NSBM student and
staff. Readers must produce their Student
Identity Card / National Identity Card when
entering the library, borrowing books or any
other time when called upon to do so.

Readers are not permitted to bring bags,
parcels, personal books, spiral binding,
envelops, any kind of files, file covers,
umbrellas, water bottle or any personal
belongings in the Library. They have to be
kept in rack of outside. Valuable items such as
jewelry or cash should not be kept there. The
Library staff will not hold responsibility for
loss of such materials.

Silence should be observed in the library.
Mobile phones should be switched off inside
the library.

Any kind of discussions, meetings or group
study and any other form of noise is not
allowed inside the library. The library is a
place for self study. Users should respect the
needs of others.

Reservations of library seats and computer
terminals are not allowed. One computer for
one user only, maximum using period 1 hour
at a time.

Consumption of food and drinks and the use
of personal audio/video equipments in the
Library are strictly prohibited.

All library materials and other resources
should be treated and protected as national
resources. Tearing, writing or misusing books,
stealing chapters of books and bringing books
out without permission are punishable
offences. Such readers are concerned liable for
disciplinary actions such as suspension of
library and examination results.

Readers are not allowed to accompany any
visitors in the Library without obtain the
Librarian's permission.

Taking photographs inside the Library is not
allowed without prior approval of Institute
authority.

It is required that all readers avoid wearing
unsuitable clothes like shorts, hats or caps etc.
when they enter the Library.
