Minutes of a Meeting of the Ruskington Patient Participation Group held at
Ruskington Medical Centre on Tuesday 3 June 2014 at 2.00.pm.
1. Present
Julie Walsh Practice Manager, Yvonne Woodland Practice Administrator, Stacey Wilbraham,
Lyndsey Wilson Nurse Practitioner, Mr R. Vaughan Co- Op Pharmacist and Nicola Tallent
from Health watch, Lincolnshire.

2. Appointments of Staff at Ruskington Surgery
a.
Linda Gardener Nurse Practitioner has relocated to Cyprus.
b.
Dr Helen Wilson has been appointed for three days a week to Ruskington Surgery
from July.
c.
Dr Qadir and Dr McCreedy have been appointed as locums until July.
d.
Lyndsey Wilson has been appointed as Nurse Practitioner with expertise in minor
ailments, sexual health, gynaecological problems and medication reviews.
e.
Two apprentices have been appointed from Grantham College. They are on a
contract for one day a week from June 30 2014 for a year and will gain experience in
all departments of the surgery and cover an NVQ syllabus.
f.
The surgery needs to offer 4 more hours of care. It may be possible to extend
surgery 2 hours one evening a week with a Doctor and Nurse Practitioner to enable
patients who work to have routine checks or problems without having to take time
off from their employment.
f.
JW is planning training sessions for the reception staff. Volunteer members of the
P.P.G would be given a sheet of possible requests, situations and problems to ask
and feedback would be given a week later.

3. Appointments
a.
System is generally working well but some patients are still finding it difficult to
obtain an appointment. There are three receptionists to answer the phone from
8.00am – 10.30am every morning for appointments and on line appointments are
available.
At present 3656 patients have registered for System on Line On line.
b.
Appointments to see the Nurse Practitioner and the two Nurse Prescribers can be
booked for up to 2 days in advance. They have different areas of expertise and are
able to diagnose, prescribe, authorise appointments for patients to hospital and
carry out home visits if necessary.
c.
Appointments for the Health Care Workers can be booked up to a month in
advance.
d.
Physiotherapy is available on a Doctor referral twice a week on Wednesday and
Friday at the Ruskington Surgery.
e.
Walk in centres for medical advice operates in Lincoln and Boston. Both have full
access to records of patients who have given their consent. Minor injuries are dealt
with at the Sleaford Medical Group Surgery.
f.
After a consultation doctors are able to book follow up appointments if needed.
g.
There is a possibility that appointments for the Nurse Practitioners will be added to
the on line booking service.
h.
Daily Triage system is available for a doctor or Nurse Practitioner to give advice over
the phone and arrange for prescription or an appointment if deemed necessary.
i.
Patients are reminded that 48 working hours are needed to generate prescriptions.
Some drugs take time to obtain. Prescriptions ordered from the Chemist etc take 4
days.
j.
Di Gallon has been appointed as part time Pharmacist at Ruskington Co-Op. There
will always be a qualified pharmacist present if Ms Gallon is not available.
4. Named GP for Patients over 75.
From 30 June patients over 75 are to be given a named GP. This does not mean you cannot
see another doctor for appointments. Monthly meetings are held at the surgery with the
panel consisting of district nurses, hospice at home care nurses, Macmillan nurse, health
workers, midwife, social workers, nurse practitioners and doctors. Vulnerable and ‘at risk’

patients are discussed and a named GP responsible and understanding the needs of each
patient will enhance the service.
Patients who are currently registered at Ruskington Medical Practice and are 75 and over
will be assigned to Dr Ryder. New Patients to the surgery and those who become 75 after 30
June will be assigned to Dr Montague and Dr Wilson.
5. Healthwatch, Lincolnshire.
Nicola Tallent from Healthwatch, Lincolnshire gave a short presentation about the service. It
is an independent organisation throughout the country to give patients and carers the
opportunity to celebrate good service, ask for help if being given poor service and
recommend how services can be improved in all NHS departments.
Patients Participation Group.
a.
WD asked Mr Vaughan if it was possible to always obtain tablets from the same
manufacturer given that some ingredients from different manufacturers have an
adverse effect on her.
b.
JF asked about progress in obtaining automatic doors into the Nurses and Doctors
corridors. JW assured the matter was in hand but £2000 needed to be raised for the
project.
c.
The Practice agreed to have a stall in the Winchelsea Centre on Saturday 28 June to
‘showcase’ the Surgery. AC has booked the stall through Mrs Butterworth.
d.
AC suggested the Surgery might like to have an article in the quarterly Ruskington
Signpost magazine showing opening times, the appointment system, clinics
available, new equipment etc. This would especially benefit people without
computers.
e.
Several members of the group felt there was a need for another Doctor at the
practice. JW explained the ratio of patients to doctors was correct at Ruskington
Surgery and patients are able to see a Nurse Practitioner for minor problems.
The next meeting of the Group will be Tuesday 2 September at 2.00 pm at the Medical
Centre.
