Class Sample: Survival
It was a tranquil morning. Two malicious alligators were entangled with
their prey disrupting the peaceful natural setting. The slow meandering river
where this entanglement occurred quickly erupted in loud splashes of water. Water
bolted every direction like lava spouting out of an erupting volcano.
The river slowly turned into an ominous red. The violent thrashing abruptly
stopped, once again bringing a quietness and calmness. The lifeless form of what
appeared to be a small deer could be seen dragged away by its predators. The air
was muggy but the scent of fresh blood was unmistakable. Only when both predator
and prey were a distance and safety seemed certain did I emerge from the hollowed
out tree trunk which served as my temporary dwelling. The winds terrified me

when I slept. The trunk, that served as my dwelling for the past two days after the
crash, eerily complained under the immense pressures – like nails dragging
across the chalkboard.
I cautiously started to search for my missing students unaware of any
apparent volatile danger. One thing I knew, some may be dead and others seriously
hurt. I had no time to waste. My students were undeniably lost as I was. They too
were scared turtles; hiding and just waiting for an opportunity to come out
from some shelter and try to find one another.
Suddenly there was a shark “snap” from just to the side. I froze in my tracks
realizing that someone or something caused a twig to snap. My heart pounding, I
cautiously turn knowing I was doomed if I had to fight or flee. My face paled as I say
a bloody hand reach from the tall grass. I recognize the unique gold quarts watch
immediately. It was young Marshall’s.
