Getty is a Professional Home Economist from Winnipeg,MB. She brings to our conference the inspiration
of transformation. Getty will share personal experiences through the story of “Fruit Share” and the
“Prairie Fruit Cookbook” in which she authored in 2012. She will encourage us to reflect on what we are
doing in our classrooms and community, and how we can make changes for the better. She will provide
inspiration to Home Economics teachers and discuss how Home Economists are ideally positioned through
their training, knowledge, practical skills and audience to lead change in current food practices. Getty will
also be bringing along copies of her cookbook “Prairie Fruit Cookbook” to sign and sell. For more

In this workshop with Getty, participants will learn the ins and outs of using a food dehydrator to
preserve popular fruits and veggies. She will have samples along for touching, tasting, rehydrating and
examining. She will also provide tips for dehydrating in the oven. Participants can get further

TP2 - Nourishing Minds & Healthy Foods for My School, Barb Wright
Barb is the Public Health Nutritionist for Sun Country Health Region. She works with a variety of groups
including schools to provide workshops, information sessions and displays about healthy eating and making
good food choices. In this session, Barb will present and discuss the provinces healthy food documents
and help to answer questions we, as teachers, have about anything from food nutrition policies to choosing
recipes that will benefit our students.

TP4 - Mathematics & Home Economics Classroom: Cross Curricular Projects,
AnnaLee Parnetta
AnnaLee Parnetta teaches home economics at Kamsack Comprehensive to a diversified group of students
in grades eight to twelve. In recent years she has taken an interest in mathematics and has co-taught
MWA 20 and Math 8. She is currently teaching Grade 9 Math. Mathematics is around us every day and as
a teacher AnnaLee enjoys the challenge of finding ways for her students to understand how math is so
much a part of everyday living. This session will provide ideas and projects, and cross curricular projects
that will help to connect current math outcomes within home economics curriculum both at the middle
years and high school levels.

ASHE Session during SHETA AGM: Tour of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic
Church
St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church celebrates its 100 th anniversary on August 23 of this year. This is
the very first Ukrainian Catholic church in Western Canada to be built of brick, and has amazing hand
painted walls and ceilings. The building also has a monastery and seminary wing. The church contains many
icons including one blessed by Pope Benedict XV in 1916 and is an original that was hand painted on wood in
Rome.

FA1 - Italian Bacon & Marinara Sauce, AnnaLee Parnetta
Have you considered tackling the ideas of food sustainability, recycling and economics with your food
studies students? This session will present lesson ideas on how teachers can use their local area to
harvest foods for preservation and how to teach preservation and home canning in a classroom setting. As
well, this session will teach you how to step outside of the fruit and vegetable realm and take on the easy
challenge of meat preservation in your classroom. Lessons plans, video and recipes will be shared in this
session and online resources will be provided. AnnaLee Parnetta teaches in Kamsack, and she and her
husband make their own bacon and pancetta and various smoked meats. Be amazed at how easy teaching
home preserving in your classroom can be.

FA2 - Parkland Regional College into the Future: STAT Keynote, Mike Cameron
Mike Cameron is from Parkland Regional College, which is located in Yorkton on Yorkton Regional High
School Grounds. Parkland Regional College attracts students to a variety of SIAST and University of
Saskatchewan and University of Regina programs. STAT conference is being held at the same time as
SHETA and a partnership has been set-up for a few of the sessions. This session is the keynote speaker
for all STAT attendees.

This session will allow participants to tour the Yorkton Regional High School commercial cooking facility.
Terry will also be sharing a variety of ideas regarding lesson and menu planning including First Nation

The office of the Saskatchewan Ombudsman and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner will share a
hands-on resource: Just So You Know… Tips for Living in a Changing World. This resource looks at
practical ways students can deal with provincial government services, resolve issues and learn how these
offices keep government accountable.

FA10 - Harvest Meats Tour, Bill Grant
Harvest Meats began over a century ago and is one of Saskatchewan’s top meat processors. The business
began in the small community of Rhein and today employs over 250 people in a state of the art facility just
west of Yorkton on Highway 16. Get an inside look into one of Saskatchewan’s top meat processing plants.
This tour will allow you right into the facility to see how Harvest processes all of their great products.
Participants are asked to wear pants, no jewellery, and no high heels. You will be suiting up for the tour
with proper attire as supplied by Harvest.

FA11 - Fun with Circles Placemat (Foundational Piecing), Colette Sayer
Learn to use the Circle Savvy ruler, fusible web and learn three different ways to appliqué. You will also
learn how to sandwich your place mat and finish it with a bias binding. Learn the fast and easy way to
finish your binding with perfect mitred seams. Participants are asked to bring along a sewing machine, a
basic sewing kit, rotary cutter and small cutting mat.

Participants will take away one completed pair of either moccasins or mittens in addition to instructions
and patterns for both projects. Sara has been using this project with her grade 9 home economics

Studies 10 course, or Visual Arts 20.

Smarter Science, Better Buildings has been developed collaboratively by the Saskatchewan Environmental
Society, the Western Development Museum, VerEco Homes, with assistance from Saskatoon Public School
Division, and Sun Ridge Group. Sponsored by SaskEnergy and SaskPower. This hands-on workshop allows
students to explore the concepts of heat and temperature through the practical application of making our

FP3 - Principles and Elements of Design, Godfrey Dean Centre
Since the 1950s, the Yorkton Arts Council has hosted and organized visual art exhibits in various locations
in Yorkton. The construction of the Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre brought together two galleries and
office space which is adjacent to the historic Land Titles Building on Smith Street. There will be two
special exhibits to tour through. The first is a display of sculpture; the second display is a secret until
mid-September, but will be exciting and innovative. The group will receive a guided tour of the exhibits as
well as a history of the Art Gallery.

FP5 - Discovering Research Needs in Home Economics, McDowell Foundation
Have you ever considered doing research by yourself or with a group of teachers? Research fulfills a
need of answering questions and collecting supporting data to answer questions and concerns. McDowell
Foundation, as part of the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation, provides support and funds for teachers to
conduct research. There is currently no research conducted in the area of Home Economics education
through the McDowell Foundation. Find out how easy it is to apply for a research grant and receive the
support needed to conduct research in the school environment in the area of Home Economics Education.

This is a great opportunity to share and listen to others about ideas and challenges within the home

great sharing opportunity for first year teachers and interns. Bring a USB stick as many will share
electronics copies as well.

FP11 - Math and Sewing: Paper Piecing, Colette Sayer
Learn the art of paper piecing or foundation piecing. Learn how to achieve perfect points by stitching your
fabric directly onto foundation paper and then removing the paper. This is a great class for beginner
quilters. Participants are asked to bring a sewing machine, rotary cutter and small cutting mat.

During this session, you will work in the Yorkton Regional High School commercial cooking facility and make
some First Nations recipes. Terry Cornelius has a Métis background and will provide insight into the
culture as well as provide an opportunity to learn about First Nation and Métis food. Participants are
asked to bring along two sealable containers to take home bannock and tourtiere.

FP13 - Cosmetology: Skill Development – STAT Session, Siobhan Loos
Information about the Cosmetology Skills Canada Competition will be shared and presented by Siobhan
Loos, Skills Saskatchewan Hairstyling Skills Expert. Siobhan will focus on the Hairstyling Competition and
how to understand the scopes in addition to providing a demonstration of technique/photos/mannequins
and open forum questions.

FP14 - Russian Pastries, Bernice Makowsky
Bernice is a retired home economics teacher from Kamsack. She is well known in the community for her
baking, especially the Russian delight “piroshky”. In this session, students will learn how to make the
dough and filling and hand make these beautiful pastries. This is a wonderful lab opportunity for cooking
students to attempt. Be sure to bring along a Tupperware container or two to take home your work.

Service Best is an award-winning, internationally recognized workshop designed to assist frontline staff in
the delivery of superior customer service.
The Service Best Teacher In-Service will assist high school teachers in:
 delivering the Service Best workshop to students.
 becoming familiar with the concepts and objectives of each unit in the Service Best manual.
 brainstorming with colleagues on how to customize the delivery schedule and workshop activities.
 understanding how students can obtain a Service Best certificate and the merits of writing the
exam.
Teachers will receive the teacher’s manual as well as the student manual black line master which can be
copied for student use in the classroom.

2. Big and Bold Beginner Quilting Workshop, Megan Crittenden
Megan is a home economics teacher at Blaine Lake School and creates beautiful quilts with her students.
This full-day session will allow you to learn the basics of quilting using a simple fat quarter. The pattern,
material for the top and binding will be provided. This is an easy project that be done with students. The
finished size will be 58” x 75”.
Supplies Required: Bring the following: sewing machine, a basic sewing kit, a few spools of basic colours of
thread including white and black, extension cord, rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler.

3. Nifty Notions and How to Make Zipper Jewellery – provided by Colette Sayer,
owner of Colette’s Sewing Machines Plus
Come and check out the newest sewing notions on the market and how to use them. Bring a notion you have
and you are not sure what it is for or why you even bought it, or bring a notion you love and share it with
everyone.
The newest thing out there right now is Zipper Jewellery. Your students will love to make these pieces for
themselves or for gifts. It’s fun and easy to do. In the first part of the day Colette will show you how to
use a variety of notions and in the second half, you will be learning how to use zippers in creative ways.
Curriculum connections: Math literacy, Clothing, Textiles & Fashion 10/30 (Modules 1, 2, 3, 7, 11),
Enrolment: Min - 10 Max – 20
Location: will take place at Colette’s Sewing Machines Plus (206 Smith Street E) (across the highway
from the Days Inn)
***Note this session will be four hours but this will allow time for you to shop to your heart’s content in
Colette’s amazing store.
