Position Description
Lecturer, Psychology
A Level B academic is expected to develop curriculum, teach and undertake research or other
scholarly work relevant to the development of their discipline or professional field.
A Level B academic will normally contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and
postgraduate level, engage in scholarship and/or research and/or professional activities appropriate
to his or her profession or discipline. He or she will normally undertake administration primarily
relating to his or her activities at the institution and may be required to perform the full academic
responsibilities of and related administration for the co-ordination of an award program of the
institution.
Position Context
The School of Psychological Science has been established at La Trobe University since 1972 and has
an excellent reputation within Australia and overseas. The main section of the School is at the
Bundoora campus, with additional sections at the Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo campuses. The
School is charged with the academic responsibility for all psychology undergraduate courses and
postgraduate training, including Master and Doctor of Psychology programs, within the University. In
addition to teaching, the School has a very active set of research programs and provides professional
development opportunities for qualified psychologists. The position will be based at the Bendigo
campus.
Duties at this level may include:

Undertake undergraduate teaching in the areas of neuroscience and research methods
within the School of Psychological Science.

Act as subject co-ordinator for undergraduate subjects or units within the School.

Supervise student research projects at all levels from third year to doctoral students.

Conduct research in one or more fields linked to the School’s designated areas of priority.

Engage in professional and community activities.

Undertake a range of functions the majority of which are connected with the subjects in
which the academic teaches.

Conduct administrative and committee duties in a effective and responsible manner.

Undertake other duties as directed by the Head of School.

Key Selection Criteria
ESSENTIAL

PhD or equivalent qualification in psychology.

Eligibility for membership of the Australian Psychological Society.

Demonstrated experience relative to qualifications in teaching and research in area of
expertise.

Demonstrated ability to supervise student research projects.

Established high quality, high impact research record including publications in refereed
journals.

Evidence of the ability to work as a member of a team in a co-operative and collegial
manner.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.
DESIRABLE

Expertise in the core areas of neuroscience and research methods in psychology.

Demonstrated ability to attract research funds from external competitive funding bodies.

Experience in the development and delivery of flexible mode and distance education
programs using multimedia methods, including videoconferencing and web-based teaching
support for learners.
