ISSUES RELATED TO PLANNING, COORDINATION AND MANAGEMENT OF COMMISSION
ACTIVITIES
Collaboration with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
1.
Introduction
1.1
CIMO and. ISO Technical Committee 146 “Air Quality” / Sub-Committee 5 “Meteorology”
(ISO TC146/SC5) are currently actively collaborating on two common WMO-ISO standards:
2.

Siting Classification for Surface Observing Station on Land.

Ground-based remote sensing by Doppler wind lidar.
Siting Classification for Surface Observing Station on Land
2.1
CIMO-16 approved the text of the standard “Siting Classification for Surface Observing
Station on Land”. It will be published in the 2014 Edition of the WMO Guide for Instruments and
Methods of Observation.
2.2
ISO is also in the process of finalizing the adoption and publication of this standard. It
seems that the standard will not have to undergo a new vote at the Final Draft International
Standard (FDIS) stage, but will go directly to the publication stage.
3.
Ground-based remote sensing by Doppler wind lidar
3.1
A meeting of the working group responsible for the development of the standard “Groundbased remote sensing by Doppler wind lidar” was held in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, in
parallel with TECO-2014.
3.2
The draft standard developed during that meeting was then submitted for vote within ISO
TC146/SC5 and has now reached the level of a Draft International Standard (DIS) (Stage 4 of
the ISO Standard approval procedure, see Appendix). ISO members are now invited to collect
comments from interested communities.
3.3
CIMO experts have already provided comments on this Draft International Standard (DIS)
which will have to be considered and addressed together with the other comments that may be
received during the consultation process. The next version of the standard is expected to be
produced mid 2015 leading to the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS), which will have to
be submitted for voting within both ISO and CIMO.
4.
Other topics of common interest for ISO and CIMO.
4.1
ISO TC 146/SC5 has decided to develop a standard on weather radars. Mr Simon Jaeckel,
Secretary of the ISO TC 146/SC5 will be invited to join the CIMO MG meeting for this agenda item
and will be able to provide additional details on the plans of ISO TC 146/SC5 which may be of
relevance to CIMO.
