Seward County Community College/Area Technical School
The Seward County Community College/Area Technical School Cosmetology Instructor Course is dedicated to educating and training
certified cosmetologists who desire to enter a career field in teaching cosmetology. The instructor course is a 450 clock hour course

Career Opportunities
Your knowledge, image and all your professional skill, from teaching to communication, will be key
components in advancing and improving the standards of your cosmetology education. While most licensed
cosmetology instructors are employed in cosmetology schools, the instructor who wants something
different might explore other alternatives such as:
 School Instructor
 Manufacturer Representative/Field Technician
 Cruise ship stylist
 Distributor/Sales Consultant
 Photo Stylist
 Manufacturers Spokesperson
 Colorist
 Test Salon Cosmetologist or Product Analyst
 Guest Artist or Platform Artist
 Education Manager or Management Consultant
 Salon coordinator
 Chain Salon Employees
 Salon Manager/Salon Owner
 Trade Publication Publisher, Writer, or Editor
 School Owner or Director
Commitment, ambition, technical skill and professional communication and net working pave the way to
your success. Your opportunities are just waiting to happen.
Degree Options
The cosmetology instructor program offers a 300 hour or 450 hour preparation for the licensure
certification exam form the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology. An Associate of Applied Science degree
in cosmetology may be obtained with 19 additional credit hours.
Advising
The cosmetology department advisor will help plan your course of study for the completion of a certificate
or degree program. Feel free to contact the Admissions Office and schedule a visit to tour the Seward
County Community College/Area Technical School campus.
Facilities
The facility’s opening ceremonies were held in July of 2001, with the majority of the equipment being
donated by the JC Penney Co. The 6,000 square foot building is located at the northwest corner of the
campus adjacent to adequate, free, well-lighted student, customer, and designated handicapped parking.
The salon clinic area includes 16 stylist work stations, 8 shampoo bowls, 10 hairdryers, and the dispensary.
A comfortable reception area is located in the clinic along with a large display of retail products including:
Redken, Matrix, TIGI, Nioxin, Kenra, BioElements, Creative, OPI and others. The students will receive
training with the Iris salon software used to keep appointments, check out clients, and keep inventory.
Facilities include a separate room for facial and skin care, a separate room for the nail services and waxing,
one theory classroom includes hands-on instruction, and the other theory classroom is connected to the nail
service area. The nail service area includes four pedicure chairs, five manicure tables, and a paraffin wax
station. Students have access to the student break room that houses a soft drink machine, snack machine,
refrigerator, microwave, and student lockers. The cosmetology school offers the client consultation system
from Cyber Imaging. This system allows the student to put a client’s face on a computer to see changed
hairstyles and hair colors before the service is provided. The cosmetology school also has the only
ImagNail machine in western Kansas. This machine will print any picture on the natural or artificial nail.
